Bad latch plus no milk yet

LO was born early AM on December 30th. Today we leave the hospital and I'm so frustrated/defeated. LO was a vacuum baby and will not open wide so we have been using a nipple shield. I am not producing much colustrom (sp) and no milk in sight yet. I just want to cave and start formula today because I want him to eat. Plus he has some jaundice. Am I terrible for wishing they would stop talking me into continuing to BF and just go for formula. The nurses/lactation consultants are awesome, but I just want him to eat.

Sorry for panicky post. I just don't know what to do.

Update: his jaundice level is at a 14, they are keeping us one more day, we are going to use a tube with supplement while using the breast shield. So sad for my LO. I don't care BF or FF, just want him to eat!!

I had a similar thing happen when my LO was born. I have to use a nipple shield and my LO was not latching and jaundiced, and it took a while for my milk to come in. However after we got home with the hospital and I kept using the shield it got much better. Now we have no problems at all. My milk came in about 4 days after he was born and prior to that I just had very little colostrum coming out. Good luck, I hope your LO is ok!

I had similar problems when CJ was born. He was premature and had latch/jaundice. I was terrified about him eating enough and he was so sleepy I could barely rouse him to eat even the tiniest bit. In the end I was advised to attempt bf for  30 min thensupplement with formula. I did this and his numbers started to stabilize when we got home bfing was still tough but I stuck with the advicee and after about 7 days I didn't need to supplement anymore. It was scary at first but hang in there and lean on te nurses at the hospital they gave me great reassurance and support.

I broke down today crying over very similar issues.  I gave birth on the 28th and sometimes my son will latch and suck for a few min but most times it is just a few seconds.  I started pumping last night to encourage my milk to come in and today I have continued to try and breast feed while at the same time pumping and giving him what I have pumped with a spoon in order to try and avoid nipple confusion.  We see our Ped on Thursday but I might call and ask to come in tomorrow to make sure he is doing okay.  Today so far we have only had one dirty diaper.  I share your frustration and hope that this turns around quickly for you!

HANG IN THERE! Your baby is born with lots of extra fat for this very reason. Also, LO's stomach is the size of a marble. Nobody is going to let your child starve; have some faith in your body and LO's instincts. Don't give up!

I had the same problem.  I had a c-section and couldn't be with my little guy for two hours after birth so we never had that skin-to-skin right away...on top of that it turns out diabetes can cause low milk supply and I've been type 1 for 7 years.

My poor little guy would latch and not get much so he would scream and cry and flail.  I would try switching breasts, massaging, everything but I gave in and formula fed and he nursed like a pro.

Met with a lactation consultant yesterday and she got me a nipple shield and I'm also pumping hoping my milk will come in... if all else fails there are pills they can give me to help my milk come in.

It's stressful at times, especially when my little guy cluster feeds and I can't find time to pump, but just don't give up yet... if your lo isn't eating enough you can supplement for awhile which is what I'm doing until milk comes in full.  It wasn't my first choice but a good mother isn't based on bf or ff it's making sure your child has enough to eat.

Absolutely nothing wrong with supplementing.

Lurking here. This is similar too my story for DD1 too. She would not eat and I had no milk yet, so we supplemented at the hospital. I pumped and used the nipple shield. After a few weeks I got rid of the shield and ended up BFing for 8 months. Supplementing now does not mean you won't be able to continue BF. Good luck!
