standing in crib at naptime

Yesterday my 10 month old DS began standing in his crib at nap time. In the past he has always fussed for a few minutes and then gone to sleep, but now it takes up to 45 minutes to get him to fell asleep. My DH and I have been unsure as to whether we should go in and lay him back down when he stands up or just let him figure out how to get back down. Needless to say we are frustrated to say the least. What has worked for folks?

We let our son figure things out on his own.  We would put him down for a nap, and not go back in until at least an hour later.  If he was sleeping, we'd leave him be.  If he was awake, we'd take him out and try again later.

We gave DS plenty of time to practice going from standing to sitting during his awake hours so that if he stood in the crib, he wouldn't be "stuck" there screaming for help.

However, it has also been taking our son longer to fall asleep this past week, so I'm wondering if he's ready to drop a nap.  Our son is almost 11 months.

Our DD will not only stand but jump or walk around in her crib if she isn't ready to lay down yet.  If she is truly tired and ready for a nap though she will usually lay down on her own within a few minutes.  Like PP stated, we've also noticed that DD is going longer stretches between naps recently.  Therefore I've been waiting until I see definite signs that she's tired otherwise she'll just throw a fit and not sleep.

Oh, the ever elusive nap. DD2 is about 9 1/2 months, and will only take one or two naps (usually just one) a day. We know she is tired, and she acts like a nasty little baby, but she just cries and cries when we put her in the crib. Sometimes, she goes willingly, and sometimes we have to just take her out and try again later. I think she thinks she might miss something. I say if he is not making an issue of being in his crib, then leave him there and thank the gods that you have your hands free!!

We just let her figure it out on her own. Going in there just made things take longer. Sometimes she falls asleep in 2 min, sometimes 30 min. For Lucia, it seems like the more tired she is, the longer it takes her to calm down and fall asleep.
