Exposure to the flu

Our cousin is coming to visit her mom (our aunt) with her newborn for the first time. We're supposed to come over and meet the baby this weekend, but just found out her other kids (who will be there too) just got over the flu. DH and I both got flu shots but I'm worried about the exposure. Am I being too paranoid? Or appropriately cautious?

Getting sick sucks! And you can't be sure it's the same strand your shot covers. I'd make sure they were well over this flu, and not just claiming to be over it. Plus, those that weren't sick might be starting to show signs, and it's those suckers that'll get'cha!

You might want to avoid them even if you weren't pregnant. Half my household is sick right now and it SUCKS!

No, not overly cautious at all!

Im pretty strict about this. I would not go unless everyone had been symptom free for 72h. I would not eat or drink anything...and would wash my hands like crazy.

It hurts to sneeze right now. I can't imagine vomiting, coughing for weeks or anything like that.

Best of luck.

I had the flu around 34 weeks and wanted to die. I was miserable.

I'd go but make sure you take the proper precautions - keep your distance, wash your hands, etc.

My daughter (21 months) has been sick for the past week and a half. I didn't even think about the flu because we both got shots but when I looked up the symptoms and the progression that they come on it fits her sickness to a T. I will be bringing her in tomorrow and won't be shocked at all if they tell me she has the flu. I've been trying to keep her away from everyone since she's been sick and I'm thankful that it seems like I probably won't be getting it (since I haven't already).

As long as they have been well for a good 48 hours I would go. You have no idea how much exposure you experience each day, otherwise you would be living in a bubble!

With that said, I definitely wouldn't go if you knew they still have some symptoms. I only had a 24 virus but it sucked big time, especially only being able to take tynelol.

The flu vax is nowhere near 100% effective, it just gives you a chance of not catching certain strains (there's also a very prevalent strain circulating right now which was not included in the vax).  There's no way I would chance it since you know that's what they have.

How long have they been "over it"?  Maybe they're no longer contagious?  I would definitely err on the side of caution with assuming they're no longer contagious though.  Maybe even put in a call to your care provider to see what they say.

I'm not at all alarmist about germs, but I would definitely not intentionally expose myself to the flu virus.
