Asthma and sick

Having dr issues... OB says I need to contact my primary care and they can't see me until tomorrow. In the meantime I'm having a rough time breathing and I'm waiting for a call back from the dr. Anyone been through this and have suggestions? Much appreciated!

If you're having trouble breathing you might want to just go to the ER. Hope you feel better soon.

Do you have a rescue inhaler?

This isn't a baby issue, you need to see a doctor ASAP.  If you have an inhaler, take it.  I double checked and Albuterol, at least, is just fine while pregnant.  But as my midwife said, it's better to take your inhaler and be able to breath than worry about it and have a massive asthma attack.

If you don't have an inhaler, do as PP suggested and get to the ER or Urgent Care ASAP.  As someone who has had a massive asthma attack because I didn't want to go to the ER, it can get bad fast.

I believe in a lot of things. I believe in fresh tennis balls, the healing power of bunnies, and that the novels of Susan Sontag are something I'll never read. In fact, I don't even know who Susan Sontag is. What is she... like... a painter? I believe in Crystal Lite because I believe in ME. I believe in the movies of Val Kilmer, though these days it ain't so easy. I believe in Darren Sproles, the word "dabble", the first season of "Silk Stockings", and big, warm, moist, gooey chocolate chip cookies that melt in your mouth and all over your face.

i do have a rescue inhaler and am using it every 2-4 hours. I was mainly wondering if there is anything else I could be taking from other peoples personal experiences. Also I really don't want to go to the ER or urgent care because they are in my experience not very good drs.  I will be going though if I don't feel better soon.

Use your inhaler. Most asthma meds aren't on the approved list for pregnancy meds, but my OB told me if I can't breathe, baby's not getting proper oxygen either, so I need to be able to function.

You know your body best. There are days where I've needed my inhaler every 4 hours but didn't need to go to the ER for a breathing treatment. If you feel you just aren't breathing to your full potential, I'd wait for your primary doc tomorrow. If you start wheezing hard, coughing, having shortness of breath that isn't helped by your inhaler, etc. then you may want to consider going in.

Are you on Singulair or anything else to manage your asthma besides the rescue inhaler?

Well you don't really need a good doctor to give you a nebulizer treatment.  Taking a rescue inhaler every 2-4 hours is not good.  My doctor said to take the inhaler twice a day, max, or go to the ER for the nebulizer.  It will make you feel so much better, but if you don't feel you need it then just keep doing what you have to do to keep breathing at home.  Just try not to go too long struggling to breath!!!

Good point. OP, go to the ER. It isn't worth the risk.

I agree with people who say go to the ER. Rather than use my rescue inhaler that much, I'd rather just go to the ER and do nebulizers.

Are you on any daily asthma medication? I'm on Pulmicort, which is a Class B medication.

This. You shouldn't be using your rescue inhaler that often. Go to the ER if your doctor can't see you until tomorrow. It also sounds like you need a doctor who specializes in asthma (mine is an allergist), and a controller medication.

YES!  Especially if you don't really know what triggers your asthma exactly.  If you just have issues when you get sick that's one thing, but if you get asthma even when you're not sick and you don't know the cause this is so important to find out.  I was on the wrong asthma meds for years because my regular doctor diagnosed me with exercise induced asthma when it's really allergy induced asthma.  Mostly because he wasn't a specialist and was just going off what few facts he had.

Thanks ladies, I broke down and am at the ER now. I am on advair 2x a day to control my asthma. They are going to give me a steroid breathing treatment here which I know will help. I have a super high pain tolerance but this cold is kicking my butt. It must be because I'm pregnant too. I appreciate all of your advice!
