Combination Name

MIL's name is Kathleen, and my mom's name is Karen. I was thinking we could combine the two names and use "Kathren" as a girl's middle name. I think it's clever, DH thinks it's ridiculous to use a made-up spelling. Honest opinions please. Wink

I agree with your DH, it's ridiculous to use a made-up spelling.

I definitely agree with your H.  Pick one and if you have another girl honor the other mom with that spot.  That's the sitcky thing about honoring relatives- someone is going to feel left out, but it's better than a ridiculous and made-up spelling.  Especially when in the end the name is pronounced the same as a legit name, Katherine and doesn't really honor either person.  Maybe you just like Katherine?

ETA:  actually, I need to amend my statement about honoring.  Karen is actually the Danish form of Katherine.  I knew this, not quite sure why I forgot.  And you've got the Kath for Kathleen.  If you're a literalist (which you clearly aren't given you like Kathren) then it's a stretch but otherwise I think Katherine is actually a really good option.

Sorry OP- I agree with your DH.

IMO, Katherine (this spelling) still honors both women.  I think people get too literal with things like this.

Good luck!

Team DH.  Sorry OP.

Use the Katherine spelling, like PPs have said it still honors both women but doesn't look so silly.

This is one thing I like about Jewish naming traditions - you don't name after people who are still alive.  Only those that have died.  You avoid the whole "hurting someones feelings" bit.

Yes, I think it's completely ridiculous.  Just spell it like normal if you truly like the name Katherine.

I have to agree, I think it's silly to spell the name like that.  Could you use either of your mother's middle names?

You can also use the spelling Kathryn.  Very similar but not made up.  I grew up with multiple Katherines, Kathryns, and Catherines and these were the most common spellings I saw.
