One of those IF moments

DH comes from a Greek family and every year we host them for New Year's day.  One of the traditions is a giant lamb pie that his mom makes.  Everyone stands around the table together, she spins the pie a special way, then each family gets a section. There's a dime hidden in the pie crust and whoever gets it is supposed to have good luck for the year.  It's kind of a big thing.  Well, it was abundantly clear that Pete's mom was trying to rig the game, and Pete & I ended up with the dime (she knows all about our IF struggles).

We're planning IVF with ICSI.  I know that modern medicine is going to take us a lot further than luck, but I'll take all the help we can get at this point.  But then his whole family started talking about good things that happened during their 'dime year' to convince us this will work.  I know they all love us and just want good things for us, but it made me super emotional and overwhelmed.  To the point where I had to go in the kitchen and pretend to be busy so I wouldn't burst into tears.  Later than night DH tried to explain how he felt happy and choked up at the same time- apparently we were in the same boat.

And just to keep things fun, I hadn't had a chance to tell DH yet but I got a call from our RE's office that morning that my thyroid levels were high (3.6, he likes to see 2.5) and I need to get that in check before we can start IVF.  We had been hoping to be Polar Bears, but then got pushed out to Jan/Feb, and now it looks like we're probably not going to make that cycle either.

There's no real point to this post, sometimes IF just makes me feel like I'm losing my mind and it always feels better to share those moments with you guys because I know you get it.

1st...What a cool tradition!

2nd...I fully understand why you felt emotional, it's a lot of pressure when anyone knows anything about your treatment plans. We try to appear strong on the outside, but we're allowing it to build up inside ourselves until the only thing that makes us feel better is to have a good cry.

I hope that you guys can get the go ahead soon and begin your treatment.  Fingers crossed!!!

That is a cool tradition! My DH is originally from Scotland and I love learning and sharing in the traditions!!

You are definitely not alone when it comes to the emotions that go along with IF. There are some days I want to crawl into a hole, but what good would that do. I tri to take it one day at a time - sometimes minute by minute.

Fingers crossed that you will be able to get things figured out and moving on quickly!

Hi there. I'm new here, but I just wanted to say that I really believe in good luck traditions, and it sounds like your family is super loving and supportive, but it would still be overwhelming to get all that attention. Like you said, IVF and modern medicine will hopefully take you farther than just luck and "trying" alone. I think I would have felt exactly the same way...on a rollercoaster of emotions. Maybe you and I will be on the same cycle...we are aiming for March. I hope you get things figured out and a plan for moving forward as soon as possible.

I think the dime fortune is awesome! It must also feel so good to have so many people supporting you. Increase your thyroid meds and get back on track-- you'll be ready soon! Good luck! :)
