wanting to generate discussion - WDYT of Ottilie?

I LOVE this name. I don't know if it's too weird to use, but I think it's gorgeous. It's pronounced oh-TILL-ee, as far as I can tell. NN's could be Tillie or Lottie, according to Nameberry. It appears to be a French feminine variation of Otto, a GP name for DH and I.

 Thoughts?

I don't mind the way it sounds but I hate the way it looks. I like the nn's Lottie and Tillie a lot.

I think the child would be doomed to a life of spelling and pronouncing their name every time they meet someone.  If you love it go for it, but I'm not a fan.

I've heard that criticism before, but I wonder what about the spelling makes it difficult to pronounce? It seems pretty straightforward to me, and I didn't know how to pronounce Eloise. Embarrassed

I do not like Tillie or Lottie as nn's, like the full version only

The two T's and only one L make it wierd to say for me.

I'm not sure how I feel about the full name. It's pretty, but there might be issues with people being able to spell or pronounce it. I LOVE both nicknames though. They're adorable.

I think its cute. FWIW, I pronounced it OTT-ill-ie, with emphasis on the first syllable, when I first read it. Not a huge thing to correct when people mispronounce it, though.

Behind the name lists this as a German with a slightly different pronunciation.  They have it related to Odilia (female) and Uda (male).

I thought it was pronounced ott-i-lee at first glance.

I want to like it.

Hm...there are a TON of different pronunciations, according to Forvo:

http://www.forvo.com/word/ottilie/

The German pronunciation seems to be oh-TILL-yeah, and the French pronunciation seems to be oh-TILL-ee.

So my inclination would be to pronounce it with that syllabic pattern, but with an American accent. That's where I got oh-TILL-ee. However, there doesn't seem to be a consensus!

I've now walked around work with this name rolling in my head.

I really like the pronunciation oh-tee-lee-uh (which is what BTN says) or oh-till-yeah.

oh-till-ee is nice, too.

You have me liking this name.

This was my grandma's name and she was german and promounced it (I am really bad about writing these out) so basically liek Ophelia with a t instead of the ph.

At first I thought it was a bit much.  But I don't know....after reading it 15 times in this thread and saying it in my head a lot, I think you can pull it off.

It sounds very feminine to me, and soft.  I'm kind of picture Chantilly lace, probably just because it rhymes.  I prefer the first pronunciation you have, I think that one is pretty straight forward.

BUT I still prefer Eloise.  Stick out tongue

I really like this name! I think it has a very sweet charm to it. I also think it would age really well. Chances are that DH will hate it (he hates everything pretty much), but I will keep it in the back of my mind just in case...

It will always be mispronounced. This is what I thought when i saw it: ott-ah-lee, it makes me think of otter.

The two Ts make it sound like a short vowel to me, so I also pronounced it Ah-tih-lee. It isn't my style, but I don't think it is a crazy name. I have looked on a million French baby name lists and don't recall seeing it (or ever hearing it -- my husband is French Canadian and my son attends a French school). If the mispronunciations don't bother you, then go for it.

I like the name. I have a great-great-great aunt named Ottilia. I think that side of the family was either Welsh or Austrian but I don't really remember which.
