Motherhood Maternity - unauthorized debits

I just wanted to share an experience I recently had with Motherhood Maternity and Parenting magazine.

Last month I purchased some pants at MM using my debit card.  It appears they sold my BANK INFORMATION to Parenting magazine who, in turn, charged my bank account for a subscription to their magazine that I did not order.  I am sure this is illegal, but there must have been something hidden that I signed that MM didn't mention to me because I can't imagine a business of their caliber doing something like this illegaly.  I did some searching on the internet and apparently they've been doing this to people for years.

I called Parenting magazine and they say they will refund the money they already debited from my account.  However, buyers beware.  If you must shop there I'd seriously consider paying only in cash.  In my opinion, this is low down, dirty, shady, unethical etc.  Just what someone going through a high risk pregnancy needs to worry about...or anyone for that matter.

They probably asked you if you wanted a free copy of the magazine. If you don't cancel (which is nearly impossible to do) they charge you for an entire year subscription.

This.  I always say no.

They didn't because I, too, would have said no.

They ask you first. You probably weren't paying attention when you were checking out and said okay.

They may have asked you but I am telling you they did not mention to me anything about a magazine.

Then take the name off of your receipt and log a complaint about the sales person that rung you up with the store manager. That's pretty much all you can do since you already have your money back.

I just wanted to give others a heads up about this so the same thing doesn't happen to them.  Debating about it isn't really necessary.  However, here is a (somewhat old) thread about this happening to others who also say they did not authorize the charge.

I had a somewhat similar experience with Motherhood Maternity. I went to buy my first pair of maternity pants and the whole ringing up process took 20 minutes because the salesperson would NOT take no for an answer. I refused to give my phone number, address or email to her and she said that the transaction couldn't be completed without that information (this is a total lie and completely illegal according to my DH, who works in the payments industry). I got so frustrated that I said screw it and that I didn't want the pants anymore. Only then was the saleswomen able to finish the transaction. She gave me a whole big lecture that I wouldn't be able to return the pants without the receipt, blah blah blah.

Needless to say, I will not be going back to Motherhood Maternity for any future purchases.

Thank you for this post, I just bought some clothes from there. I will be watching my bank statements and account to make sure there are no unauthorized debits.

This happened to my hubby at finish line. They give you a free sports illustrated and if you dont cancel they charge you and start sending them.

He called and they cancelled it and refunded him the money. He also got to keep what ever issues came.

Id call and cancel. Get your money back.

Now Ive gotta make sure they didnt do the same thing to us in MM.

I'm sorry this happened to you, but...how do you know it was Motherhood Maternity. I've recently been getting a LOT of spam from Parenting mag, so maybe it was someone else. They don't have access to your information unless you authorize it and actually give them more information than just swiping your card, so if it was them, you should take it up with MM because it's definitely illegal.

They are SO pushy there! I HATE going in that store and prefer to just look at the maternity section at Macy's which is all MM, Pea in a Pod and Destination anyway.

Totally had this happen to me during my last pregnancy.  I swore them off and never shopped there again.  The strange thing was that the magazines were sent to my mom's  house but the electronic debits were billed though my checking account.

I am sorry this happened to you, if it was without your authorization I would contact the fraud department at your local police.  That being said - I love motherhood, almost all my mat clothes are from there.  I don't find them pushy at all, actually the staff are quite helpful and I have walked out several times without finding what I was looking for and did not feel pressured to buy anything.  I have also signed up for free samples for them with no problems. Maybe it is run  differently in Canada.

I'm gonna go with different in Canada. I loathe going in there because they are all pushy. I went in there, last resort, a couple weeks ago and they were having an awesome sale on sweaters. I told the girl, I don't wear sweaters. She proceeds to again tell me what a good deal it is, I agree but again.. I don't wear sweaters. She continues to talk about the sweaters and eventually picks me out 2 sweaters "just to try on" because she thinks I'll change my mind. Needless to say I left irritated that I even went in there because I know how they are, and vowed not to go back this pregnancy.

We were walking through the mall last week, and decided to pop into the store. DH, DS and I. Just browsing. It seemed like every.single.person who works there had to come up, greet us, ask if we needed anything, and even after we said, "No," they had to chime in with suggestions or information. I hate going in there. I feel like that happens every time. Also, I think their stuff isn't all that cute and their prices are relatively high for what they offer.

I did purchase some pants from there last month, but when they asked for my info at checkout, I didn't provide it. She tried to give me sh!t, but I said, "I'm buying these pants. That's it." She had to put in a made up due date or something, whatever. I wasn't handing over personal information to them. Glad I didn't.

I think the worst thing about this practice is that the economy is really, really bad, and sometimes people don't have the extra $ in their account, and they end up over drafting. Even if the refund comes through and their bank will refund them for the overdraft fees, it can put someone in a really crappy situation for a few days. Like, if you had $16 left to go grocery shopping while your cabinets were empty, but the magazine took out $18 for a subscription, and didn't issue the refund until ~2 days later.

Sometimes it's more than an inconvenience :/

I cannot stand Motherhood Maternity and their pushy sales tactics. Also, their return policy sucksass.

If you truly didn't authorize the transaction, file a fraud report.

This.  I always say no.

Same here.  I always reject the free magazine because I hate having to remember to cancel.

On another note, I have never had any pushy salesperson and have found them quite helpful and only assisted when I asked for help.  I've been to two different MM locations and both places staff was friendly and not pushy at all.

I was just there today, and it was a horrible experiance! I got a cute dress for Xmas, but it was the wrong size. I had the receipt, but the sales lady said she would only give me the lowest price, not the priceit was purchased for, unless I gave her the phone number of the person who purchased it, I complained and said it was a gift, I have the receipt, how can you give me less than what the receipt says!?! Luckily, I had my sil's phone number and the receipt, so was able to get the full price, but it was ridiculous! I bout a few items with the store credit I received, and she said if I didn't put my numberin the system, I wouldn't be able to return if needed. She was also rude, and pushy. It was not a fun day!

I too had a "helpful" salesperson pick out several items for me to try on, even though I just wanted to peacefully browse the sales rack. I found it quite aggressive and I was uncomfortable that I had to refuse more than one outfit that she tried to push on me. I ended up faking an emergency phone call so I could just leave without feeling pressured. It was a bad experience and I will not go back.

Yep, they asked me if I wanted a free copy and then charged me for a subscription.  I don't mind, because I usually get parenting magazine and my current one was about to expire.

You don't have to agree to anything (they don't offer you a free magazine when you check out) they just give it to you without asking. At least, that's been my experience both times I've shopped there.

But your receipt does have a blurb about the whole thing at the bottom. You have 30 days to cancel otherwise they'll charge your credit/debit card. If you pay in cash they'll send you an invoice which you can refuse to pay.

I agree, it's dirty.

So sorry you all had such horrible experiences!

I had a bad experience at one pretty far away (bigger mall)

and went to the closer one to get an issue resolved. (the other store left the security tag on an item I purchased....I was not going all the way back up there!)

The closer store didn't have the gator tag remover thing but she went ahead and exchanged it for the exact same thing and then helped me with some other purchases.

I agree they can be pushy... but I work retail and understand... it's their job! This particular lady was the store manager and had a great personality...I could've chatted with her forever! lol

I actually wanted the parenting magazine so that hasn't been an issue for me but I've had a similar problem with magazine subscriptions in the past...so sneaky!

Thanks for the heads up! Though, I find MM overpriced & not even cute!! After looking around (while my friend spent over $200 without really realizing it) I decided I'd shop elsewhere. I was not impressed in the least.
