Birth announcements?

Please tell me about birth announcements... Is this something everyone is planning on doing?  Or just some people?  Do you think when people receive the announcement that they feel obligated to send a gift? 

I can't decide what I want to do at this point.  I may send out a more formal announcement or just an email announcement to our close circle of friends and family.

I send one out to close family and friends, just a cute picture with birth stats on it.
Mom to 4 cute kids! 8 yo girl 6 yo boy 4 yo boy and new baby boy!

I definately don't think people feel like they need to send a gift- atleast I don't think we received anything from people that saw the announcement and felt they needed to buy something.  Most people had already given a gift at the shower and it was sorta just a way to say "here he is!" and show him off a little.

I'm sure we'll do announcements this time around too.

I sent one with dd and I will with this baby as well. I don't think anyone feels the need to send gifts because of it. It's just nice to see the baby and get the grand announcement.

I've never viewed it as a gift grabby thing when I have received them.  We will be sending them to family and close friends.

I sent one out when DD was born to close family and friends, some extended relatives. Walmart.com and Costco.com has some amazingly cute announcements by the way! Out of all the birth announcements that I have received, and from what I have heard from others who have gotten them, no one feels obligated to send a gift at all. Its like a Christmas card with a picture on/it it... you "oooo!" and "awww!" over it, smile, and thats it. Just a cute way to announce the birth and show those that couldn't be there your new little blessing :)

I had really good intentions with my daughter but then didn't end up sending them out. I probably won't send them out this time either. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer to this, just whatever you feel up for.

I sent one for my first child. It had his picture and information about his birth. I think they are nice to send to family and friends.

To me it is the same thing as Christmas cards. Think about it-people announce their pregnancies on facebook and (I hope) they do not expect gifts. It is just a nice way to announce a life change to family and friends that you may not see or talk to every day. We did not "announce" our pregnancy, so this is a nice way to let people know that we have a new addition.

We already have a couple of designs saved on tinyprints. The plan is to pick a final one and get the info soon after she is born. We are debating doing newborn pictures for it.

We plan on mailing printed announcements just to family and close friends who would actually like that sort of thing, and do a facebook announcement for everyone else. All the birth announcements that I've ever gotten were for ladies whose showers I had already attended, and I never felt as if sending something other than a congratulatory phone call was necessary. :3

We sent them out for DS1 and will for DS2 also. Only to close friends and family. It's nice to send out a cute picture of baby. I love getting them myself....

I just picked mine up from Costco yesterday to send out to family and friends. I don't see it as a gift grabby thing, just a nice way to brag about how adorable he is and to share the happy news with folks who are out of town.

Announcements are totally up to you. My MIL wants to send some to family (that I've never met) which is totally fine. So for our announcements - we will send them to pretty much everyone. To appease them. Not expecting a single gift either. Just letting them know, "Hey, she's here!"

I didn't send them out with my first, but felt a little bad. I'm sending them out with this baby, but only because my brother has started school for graphic design and has designed some really cute ones for me. It will probably be just to close family/friends though.

DH and I will be sending them out to close friends and family. Birth Announcements do not imply that the people you are sending them to will need to get you a gift.

 Plus, the birth announcement will be a nice keepsake for the baby book.

It depends how electronically connected your family is.  We have lots of older people who don't use computers so we sent printed announcements (vistaprint - we were completely happy with them).  I think it's ok to email announcements but I personally prefer to receive mailed ones so I can put them up on my fridge and display them, rather than keep it in my inbox until I do a massive email purge and delete everything.

We'll be doing them, as we did with the first. I don't think they make people feel like they need to send a gift. I've never considered sending a gift when getting an announcement (if I'm close to the person I've likely already given them one, anyway), and didn't receive any after we sent out DS's.

We had a couple of people give us REALLY generous gifts, so I decided that, having already planned to spend money on those things, I would do birth announcements as a thank you and inclusion since we really won't be seeing those people much/ever again.

So I don't think it's gift grabby, I think it is a good bonus-thank you (in addition to a thank you card, obvs.)

I am looking forward to her birth announcement! We are going to have professional pictures taken and send something formal out. I wanted to do a pregnancy announcement but that never happened. I personally am doing everything and anything I can for this baby just because of how long it took her to get to us. We struggled and suffered 2 losses in the process and now I want to shout her out from the rooftops! Of course I will send out announcements with future children as well. I am not sure if people will feel obligated to send a gift, I mean I never have. Or if I recieved an announcement from someone it was a relative or close friend so I already attended the shower and/or sent a gift. I will usually bring a little gift when I visit them for the first time at home or the hopsital. But that is just my style. I cant wait to share our joy with our friends and family. And especially those who wont make it to the shower or come see us at home or the hospital it will be nice for them to see what she looks like!

my mom gave me some where i put the baby's foot print on them, they are just too cute to not use! there aren't many in the package so it'll mostly go out to family and close friends

We will.  We found a super cute birth announcement on Etsy, it's personalized and then you print them off yourself.  :)  I've done them for all our kids.  We usually send them out the first month, but this baby is having a "meet and greet" party, so we are sending them out the day we come home from the hospital.    Plus the kids LOVE showing off their sibling and they get to be on the birth announcement with her so they love that!
