When to stop losing weight?

Hi ladies, I'm a Weight Watchers junkie and have been a lifetime member for 1 year and a half now. I'm currently working on losing a 9 lb gain I put on after my last marathon and during xmas. My question is, when do you stop losing weight? Say if I were to conceive this month do I throw in the towel then? Or can I still lose during the first tri? Just curious is all...

I think once you know you're pregnant, you should stop dieting. I think it will become increasingly important to watch what you eat when you get pregnant, but actual weight loss is not a good idea, especially since you should be eating 300 calories more a day for the babe.

I could be wrong, but doesn't WW have a stability or healthy eating plan specific to pregnant women?

They do, it's more of a maintenance thing though, and not actual weight loss.

I agree with the PP. If you are aware that your pregnant then you should be eating for heathy weight gain as directed by your doctor.

Thanks for asking this. I kind of wondered too. I pretty much figured I would just keep trying at both until I get pregnant and then will stop with trying to lose weight. Also, congrats on being a lifetime member of WW!

I would ask your doctor. I think it is not recommended to lose weight once you are pregnant, but I think there was a conversation about this before, and if somebody is obess there might be more benefits to losing some weight while being pregnant, but you need to make sure that you are getting the proper nutrition

Actually, I was curiousand looked it up. WW.com said they do not have or endorse any pregnancy weight loss or maintenance plans.
I think I got that from a comment about WW would probably come up with something in order to keep Jessica Simpson as their star representative.

They used to have a Pregnancy management plan (back in the 70s, I think--a friend of mine was on it when she was pregnant). They don't anymore. I was in WW before I had my LO and when I inquired about it, they told me I couldn't be in WW while pregnant.

Thanks for all of your input ladies!

I wish they had a pregnancy plan - I'm just scared to go overboard with the weight gain. So I want to get off those last few pounds so I don't have to lose those in addition to baby weight after the fact.

Over the weekend I noticed that WW's commercials featuring Jessica Simpson now have a disclaimer that she has suspended the program while pregnant.

Edited for my overuse of the word actually ;) OP I agree with others that you should not actively try to lose weight while pregnant. I think you could follow many of the tenets of WW such as eating a balanced diet and successfully maintain a healthy pregnancy weight gain, but losing weight can be a slippery slope.

WW can not legally endorse a plan while pregnant, to much of a chance for sue happy people, however, a lot of the principles that are taught, are good healthy eating practices for anyone, even while Pg.

I would talk to your doctor.  I don't think dieting and pregnancy are generally compatible (minus certain situations, obviously such as GD etc..).  I was a bit overweight when I got pregnant (165lbs, 5'5'') and simply from eating super healthy after I found out (and morning sickness) I lost 10lbs during the first trimester.  I was still able to eat here and there, and my doctor was not concerned.  Might not have been ideal, but I still had a bit of extra there, so I don't think it would be the same as someone who was really skinny when they got pregnant - hence why I think your doctor would be able to give you the best ideas.

This. OP, even if you wanted to do it on your own I would just give yourself like 20%-30% more points in a day (or whatever seems reasonable) and still try to stick the the basic principles of the program. WW is a fairly reasonable program as far as healthy eating goes and there's not a whole lot of depriving that you have to put yourself through in general anyways.

As far as the 9 lbs go, keep at the program and lose what you can until your BFP. Weight is temporary, you can always lose it after your pregnancy.

GL!

Thank you!

I agree, I thinking adding points would be a great idea. That way I can continue to stay focused on my healthy eating and habits, but merely increase my food intake.

I just love the program because it keeps me balanced.

What a magic crystal ball your doctor must have.

I was told I could limit mine to 15 lbs. I fully intended on doing that. 65lbs later, yeah, not so much.

Your doctor is an idiot for telling you that you will not gain weight while pregnant.

Unhealthy regardless of how overweight you are. The baby weighs more than that, which means you absolutely are losing weight.

Your doctor is still a flaming moron. That is not a realistic goal at all.

Thank you GM - I was just wondering about that.  I hear that statement sometimes (to 'not lose weight', but to gain NOTHING) and it always makes me scratch my head.

Between water weight, baby, placenta, etc., you have to gain something, or else you are actually losing weight.  To lose weight, you have to have a net calorie deficit, which is against basic nutrition advice for pregnant ladies (to eat at maintenance + a little bit more).

Hi- I haven't posted in quite awhile, but my doc told me no dieting while pregnant.  She said don't need to count calories, but don't go crazy- i.e. 1-2 cookies are fine, a box not so much.  I would discuss with your doctor, but if you only have 9 lbs to lose, I would think they would tell you to just focus on healthy eating while pregnant and worry about weight loss afterwards.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there is a version of weight watchers tailored to pregnancy.  It's actually quite normal to lose weight in the 1st tri, but from the women I know that this has happened to, it was all related to morning sickness.

There isn't.  Covered above.

I know a gal who lost 50 pounds during her pregnancy, but she was the dumb one who got pregnant 2 months after weight loss surgery.  Not good.

Plenty of people do lose weight in the first trimester from morning sickness.  Not the end of the world as long as the weight loss isn't severe.  Just make sure you eat healthy and the rest will take care of itself.  Usually.

And you really only need 300 extra calories starting in the 2nd trimester.  The key to the 1st trimester is the right nutrients and vitamins.  Keep going to your OB appointments and they'll help you figure out if you're on the right track.

In the morbidly obese women, a Dr MAY put her a small diet, but this is rare. I have had 2 patient's before, but they were both over 500# before get pregnant.

For your Dr to tell you to gain nothing, I agree with GM,  he/she is an idiot and that is truely against ACOG.

To OP, First Tri is about survival. There is a difference between "oh, I think I can stomach some chocolate" and then eat 4 pounds of it. Just eat what you can when you can. I lost almost 20#'s in my first tri. It sucked.

Do the breastfeeding plan. It accounts for the 500 extra calories you need while you are breastfeeding (200 more than you need while pregnant). That way, you won't go overboard!
