dropping from two naps to one???

ok..... my Lo has been fantastic at napping since I nap trained him last summer.  Then in sept i converted him to a 2-3-4 schedule... with in the last few weeks he has started to wake up early from one of his naps each day... Sometimes its his am nap, and sometimes its his pm nap. Yesterday and the day before he woke up from his pm nap ( always 1-3 or 1:20-3:30) after only 45 min. This morning i put him down, after he showed me he was ready for mimi's (bed), and after 45 min again he woke up. I usually let him fuss to see if he will lay back down and usually he will although very rarely will he actually fall back asleep. Is he ready to drop to just one nap a day??? I just see him getting really fussy if he stays up from 6-6:30, til 11:00...... Any advice?

From what I hear nap refusal that is a temporary blip but not a sign of a nap transition is common in the 11-12 month range.  Sometimes it means sleep needs are changing a bit in that more awake time is needed between naps and before bed.

I've been questioning this lately too, though our issue is that she's sleeping later (wakes in the 9am hour!) and it's getting hard to fit in 2 naps. Anyways sleeping issues can also be caused by a growth spurt (prob why my LO is sleeping so late lately), teething, and learning new skills.

Do you think any of those might be the issue? I'm never sure if my LO is ready to drop the 2nd nap or if it's ME who's ready, haha.

One thing I've read about dropping the nap though, is you start at an early time like noon, and slowly push it back to the time you want your LO to nap like maybe 2pm, or whatever works for you guys.

Hope that helps!

Mine started doing almost exactly what you're describing a couple weeks ago. Since then I tried a couple days keeping her up approximately 8am1pm and truthfully it was a disaster. I tried to cut out tthe nap cold turkey and not working. However, I tried something new the last two days and its worked well so far.

When she gets sleepy and wanting her am nap I let her fall asleep but not in her crib. Usually all sleeping is done in her room, but since I'm trying to transition I thought ill make this nap "less serious" if that makes sense. So I let her fall asleep on me yesterday morning and only let her snooze for 5 minutes before I got up with her, moved around, started talking to her etc. I changed her diaper and she woke up cranky at first but then happy as a clam until 1 when I put her down and bam, 3 hour nap. Today same scenario except she was in the car for the am "nap". She took a 2.5 hour nap this afternoon. I think were on our way : HTH!

My DS already transitioned to one nap.  It's been about 2 months I think so he was about 8 months at the time.  He sleeps a solid 2 hours usually again now.  My DD went to one nap a day pretty early as well.  They have both slept through the night from early on also.

What pp said about starting the one nap kinda early, like around 10:30-11 and then pushing that to be later is what I've done with both.  DS will occasionally need a 2nd nap still like if dinner will be late or if we've done something that is exhausting for him like go swimming.  He usually goes down around 11ish but can go down as late as 12 or 1 or even 2 if he's just having that much fun.
