STM question

I am looking at all these "must have" items on baby sites like babies r us and buy buy baby... A lot of it seems unnecessary. Do any STM have any advice for FTM and what they really dont need to spend their money on. Thanks!!

I think lucieslist.com had a pretty good checklist of the basics, but honestly a lot of it is going to depend on your LO. Some babies loves swings, others prefer bouncers; they might prefer one bottle type/pacifier brand/diaper brand to another, some people swear by certain things that others find a waste of money. Babies don't really need a lot, honestly. Most of it is convenience items for the parent.

I agree that most of it is about convenience. You need clothes, diapers, a way to feed baby, boob or bottle, a good thermometer, a few toys, blankets, a place to sleep, and a few toys. The rest you can add along the way. The feb board has a checklist posted at the top if that helps.

PP are correct...it is mostly baby preference. One must have for me was a bouncer or something portable you can strap baby in. It was a lifesaver for when I needed to use the restroom, shower or cook dinner. A lot of people are meh about them, but I would never go without. I could carry it in the bathroom and LO could see me while I went about my business. Even if she was crying, it was reassuring to be able to see her whole showering, etc.

I was lucky to get a bouncy chair and swing, and pack & play, from one of my friends who is through having babies.  My advice would be to check out craigslist or consignment/thrift shops for some of these "essentials."

Also, don't fell like you have to get the biggest or most expensive anything.  A $300 stroller may not be that much better than a $75 one.  I tried pushing around and folding up a few strollers before I put one on my registry.

Fisher price rock and play, bouncer, swing, play gym, exersaucer, high chair, stroller/travel system all got used regularly at our house. The pack and pkay wasn't used with much frequency the first time but I am thinking that it might get more use this time. A good carrier would probably be good to have as well. We never bothered with a wipes warmer, bottle warmer, bottle sanitizer or any of that.

Exactly - anything that is going to delay your effort to feed, change or nap your baby is a waste of time.

I'll offer this - if you have something in your house that serves a purpose that can be used when baby is here, then you don't need a new one for baby....Diaper Genie is a garbage can - you have one of those already....and you don't need an extra chore of emptying another can.  Changing table is a place to change the baby....that is all....throw a changing pad on a dresser and call it a day.  You don't want to go to the baby's room each time LO needs to be changed.  You'll find that the living room floor works just fine.

Agree that buying the most expensive thing doesn't make you a better mom.

I think a lot of what we feel like we "have" to buy for babies is unnecessary. That doesn't mean that it's not potentially helpful but that you don't actually need it. Babies need a few articles of clothing, diapers and wipes, food, and a place to sleep if you're not bed sharing. That's about it.

Here are extra things that I used quite a bit: bouncer (one that actually bounced a little), Moby wrap for under 5 months and Ergo for after that, Pack N' Play (we used the one with a bassinet for the first few months of Zoe's life, Halo sleep sacks, and that's all I can think of right now.

IMO baby must have: diapers, wipes, a place to sleep, a blanket to play on with a few small toys, car seat, tub and baby wash, and some clothes. As pp said, everything else is more convenience or specific to your baby's preference: stroller, pack and play, carrier/wrap, diaper bag, burp cloths, baby towels and wash cloths, bottles, pacifiers, etc.

Things I found wasteful: crib sets -we never used bumper or comforters; the high tech pack n play with all the bells and whistles -we only ever used the basic part and bassinet, the rest was a pain to lug around and travel with, swaddling blankets -both my kids hated being swaddled, baby towels -my kids preferred to be snuggled in regular bath towels and it kept them warmer and dried them quicker, with DD the swing was a waste of space, but with DS totally necessary if I needed to put him down to get anything done; we also didn't use our monitor for more than a week because our bedrooms are all close enough and I can hear the kids no problem. But as others have said, everyone is different with what is useful and not. GL

I agree with PP's, so much of it is convenience and preference and totally depends on the kid. You'd have an insane amount of stuff if you bought all of BRU's "essentials."

My advice is to think about different timeframes and try to pick out a few things for each stage for the first year or two of baby's life. Pick somewhere for them to hang out in and play, a few toys, whatever feeding things they may need at that time. Things that can convert into something else are great because you can use them longer. Like the bebe pod seat, I started using that thing when my DD was a few months old just to have her sit upright and play with toys hooked on the tray, then we took it everywhere as a portable high hair, and she still uses it 2 years later as a booster seat at our kitchen table. And I would leave things in boxes for a while so they can be returned if you decide later you don't really need them, rather then unpacking and assembling everything early.

All of this.

DS absolutely hated anything "fun baby stuff" related. The swing, bouncy seat, PnP, exersaucer/jumperoo, etc. The only thing that he actually did well with was the floor gym mat thing for tummy time or just to interact with something other than myself. Everything else made him scream-- he truly hated it. I saved the swing because it is one that plugs into the wall and therefore doesn't use batteries. It's also a gender neutral design. As far as the "equipment" goes, that is really all I saved.

Receiving blankets were a Godsend for me personally, because DS was a major puker with reflux. The blankets were wide enough to cover me entirely so that I didn't have to continuously change and/or smell like vomit until I HAD a moment to change. I also used them to swaddle, which he loved.

You'll obviously need the basic things like an infant car seat, clothes, etc, but I agree with PP--- they truly don't need a LOT.
