Max vs Maxwell

Max is on our narrowed-down list, and I wanted to get some thoughts on naming him just Max versus going with Maxwell as the full name and Max as a nn.  (I don't like any other full Max- names.)

I feel like Max can grow up as well as Maxwell does, and we'd probably be calling him Max most of the time anyway.  Our last name is 1 syllable, so maybe Maxwell would help with the flow, but I'm not sure I care about that too much.  Would he appreciate having Maxwell as an option to fall back on in the future though?  Should I care about the stupid celebrities who have named their daughters Maxwell?

Any arguments you have, let me hear 'em.

I usually prefer a "formal" name with a nn, but Max is an exception. It's one of those names like Lucy or Eliza that stands alone just fine.

I agree that Maxwell is the most livable of the Max- names, but it still seems like too much. I'd just go with Max.

Then again, having a single-syllable last name is an argument in favor of Maxwell. But Max Planck survived.

I think Max is a great, strong, stand alone name.

This. I have a grandpa Max and a 17-yr-old cousin Max, and it works just fine on both of them.

A 1-syllable LN might make me reconsider, but it's not a dealbreaker by any means if Max is your favorite. (Actually, my cousin Max has a 1-syllable last name, and I'd never noticed that until just now!)

And no, don't worry about celebrities naming their daughters Maxwell. That's silly :)

Me too. I have a 15yo cousin named just Max and it works really well. I never thought of it as a nn

Biased opinion since my son is just Max.

I think it depends on the flow and ballance of the name. If Max and your last name flow well and you ballance with middle name. It is hard to say when you don't know the last name. :)

I think Max is fine on it's own.

My DS is Max.  We have a longer last name so just Max works very well.  I think it is a great stand alone name.

However, since your LN is 1 syllable, I might consider using Maxwell (thought it'd really only make a difference on paper since you'd just call him Max).  Depends how it sounds exactly.

I currently have a Max and Maxwell in one of my classes. They both go by Max, and they are both a little...behavior challenged...Anyhow, I think Max stands alone just fine.
