Fun to read these!
DH and I met randomly over skype. It was 2005 and I was living in Helsinki for the year. I'd had skype on my computer so I could call my parents back in Canada for free (this was how Skype worked at the time... now you have to pay to call phones). I was told about this new programme by a girl named Naomi who had lived in Ohio for a time.
Anyway, the second day I'd had the programme, this guy from Pennsylvania messaged me on Skype and told me he wanted to learn Finnish. I did some quick geography and figured he must know Naomi (PA and OH are neighbours... maybe they were friends?). I said, "sure I can teach you, but I'm actually from Canada. How do you know Naomi?". He had no idea who I was talking about. That's when I learned that random people could message you/skype you. I quickly changed my security settings, but didn't delete my first Skype contact.
We ended up talking every day on Skype (side note--not a single finnish lesson was ever requested by him to this day) and began to fall in love. This was September. I met his folks over Skype and even helped his little sisters with Algebra homework. We started talking about meeting and he bought a ticket to Helsinki to meet me in May. That was so awesome/terrifying/exhilarating when we spent those first few weeks together.
When I returned to Toronto we kept up a LDR for our remaining university years. Then we got engaged in 2008 and moved to Japan to teach English for two years. We were finally married in 2010 and have been living back in Canada since.
