At like 5 months. They're gross and unnecessary.

Never did it. I don't see any reason why you need to continue.

You can still mix it with foods to thicken them up. It doesn't really serve much purpose though except maybe to give some additional iron. I make Quaker oatmeal for my LO instead.

So what can I substitute? Oatmeal with fruit maybe? Just regular oatmeal? Just trying to think of more food options. Mine are so repetitive. Dd is nine mos and doesn't have teeth.

You can do oatmeal, yogurt, rice (like real rice, not cereal).

You can stop it if you'd like. We skipped it as well. I just grind up regular oatmeal in the Beaba Babycook and add fruit puree sometimes or flaxseed meal with cinnamon.

We skipped rice cereal too. Instead I give them steel cut oats, pearl barley, amaranth, and a few other grains.  Most fruits are great mixed with them.  DS is a huge fan of oats with prunes.

Keep in mind that even without teeth, they can eat quite a bit.  Most of their early eating is just mashing things on their gums, not really chewing.  You'd probably be surprised what she can eat!

Are you on finger foods yet?  There are lots of grain finger food options - Puffs, cheerios (once LO has mashing with gums down), small pieces of soft bread, etc.

We started yogurt with fruit for breakfast at 7.5 months and never looked back.

We still do use baby oatmeal or baby mixed grains for thickening the occasional puree or soup to make it easier to spoon feed.

Never used rice, DD eats Gerber oatmeal and a fruit puree for dinner and wheat cereal with yogurt for dinner.  She won't eat the fruit puree or yogurt alone (too sweet) so I mix with cereal and she loves it.  Plus, her iron was borderline low (11) at her 9 month well so I like all the iron it provides.

We never used rice cereal.

DS likes oatmeal though. Just grind it up and add some fruit (we puree it still).

Thanks for this!! I can't believe that I've been forgetting these other grains. I want to let my dd try them.  She has oats all the time, but I will try the amaranth, millet, quinoa, etc...

I honestly wish that I never bought the one box of rice cereal that I have.  It's sitting in the cupboard 3/4 full..waste of $4.00

I think most people only ever use that for babies that have problems with spitting up, or as a very early first food. We didn't use it with DD2. She eats straight up oatmeal, and she just cut her two bottom teeth earlier this week. Gerber has a good on the go oatmeal you can pop in the microwave for 20 seconds. Buy one of those and try it out to see how LO does. Yobaby yogurt is good, organic and made for little babies, and they have a YoToddler too. Mashed or sliced bananas, depending on LO's eating abilities, or well cooked peaches, etc. with oatmeal. I stick to yogurt in the morning before her first bottle of formula. Its easier for me.

This! My LO eats such a wide variety of foods and as long as they are small and some what soft, he can eat it. I make old fashioned Quaker oats (not instant packets) and mix cinnamon and fruit in it. My LO loves it!
