Crazy flu statistics.... did you get the shot?

No drama meant here- I just saw the ABC news story about the flu statistics so far this year.  .  I didn't get it yet, because I didn't feel comfortable about getting it at my first appointment, but I am still thinking about it.  Why or why didn't you get it?

Yes, I got it.  My NP strongly recommended it :) They have a vaccine for pregnant women which is preservative free.  I received it at 10 weeks.

I did not get it because I never felt the need to. My midwife backed my decision. None of my friends got it either, including someone who was pregnant during the whole H1N1 scare a few yrs back.

I also feel that because America makes its money off of healthcare, it is more pushed down there, as opposed to Canada, where I am.

I did not get it because I never get the flu shot (I believe in building my own immunity). I may feel different if I had underlying health issues though.

My OBGYN suggested it but did not push it and showed now concerns that I chose not to get it. Also, apparently there is more concern if you are giving birth during flu season but even then I don't think she would have pushed.

So far everyone that I know who got the flu this year, HAD the shot. Those of us who did not get the shot, have not got the flu yet. Don't forget that the shot only protects you from a few strains of the flu- there are still other strains, you can still get the flu ! It just "protects" you from the few most prevalent strains.

Do what YOU feel is best for you.

I am getting one tomorrow. I get one every year because I have asthma and when ever I get sick, it seems to go straight to my chest.

I think it also depends on your exposure risk. Anyone who works with the general public directly, elderly, children or in health care are at a much higher risk.

I got it because:
- my OB recommended it
- the CDC recommends it, especially in pregnancy
- pregnant women are more likely to become severely ill from getting the flu due to compromised immunity during pregnancy
- I work in the medical field

I got the preservative-free shot when I was about 9 weeks along.

I got it.

My doctor's prediction about a particularly bad outbreak this year turned out to be true.  Not only are the national statistics bad, but I'm watching people around me drop like flies from the flu. The flu is particularly dangerous for pregnant women (and their babies).

I got it because after all the research I did, I decided that the benefits far outweigh the risks. I prefer to protect myself and my baby from the possibility of life threatening complications associated with flu in pregnant women.

I got the flu shot this year because even though I'd never gotten one before I'd been advised to get one by my OB doctor.  Luckily my insurance covered it and I didn't have to pay for it otherwise I couldnt' have afforded it.

I got the shot. I'm not a fan of needles but I wanted to take precaution in the event I was exposed to someone with the flu.  I've had a couple miscarriages and did not want to have another one.

Yes I got the shot. I never had it before including my last 2 pgs. This year I actually got the flu (which hasn't happened in forever) and was horribly sick for 4 days with a fever of 102 and vomiting, it was horrible. I ended up being very dehydrated and my blood pressure got really low and I was getting dizzy and worried about fainting. Even though i had already had the flu I opted to get the shot to protect me from the other 219 strains that the shot covers. Sure there are 260 ish strains of the flu out there so it is not 100% effective, and I could still get sick, but after that experience I could not risk it.

I did not only because I've never had it and feel nervous about getting it for the first time ever during pregnancy. I am relatively healthy, eat well, work out. The only thing that keeps me wavering is that i am a fourth grade teacher. However, I am constantly washing my hands and making my kids wash theirs. But at this stage of my pregnancy,  probably will not get it. Just a personal preference! Good luck with your decision.

I absolutely hate posts like this because all it does is cause controversy. There are a million reasons to get it and a million not to. I got it because the benefit outweighed the risk for myself and baby. I've had it five years in a row (every year since I was pregnant with DD). I've never gotten the flu.

I also am a teacher (grades 5-8) and have not had it.  Never had - it is not something that I want to try for the first time while pregnant.  If I had other health concerns, or were elderly then I might.  We had a large outbreak of the flu at my school and I washed my hands somewhat regularly, and if anything probably less than I should have (I get dry skin and hate that), and I was fine (fingers crossed).

Yes I got mine at my first OB appt and receive the vaccine every season. As a healthcare provider I recommend it but its a decision only you can make. Just make sure you know all the facts first to make an informed decision.

I received my flu shot at 9 weeks. Glad I did! My husband got the flu and was awfully sick- he's much better now & I didn't catch it. It's worth it! Especially after all the news about getting the flu & autism.

Grades 1-3 here.  I have not gotten it and have never gotten it.  I had decided early on that I definitely would not.  I occasionally go back and forth but so far not enough to change my mind.  My OB asks but does not push.  The first NP that I saw in the practice told me (when asked) that she did not for any of her three pregnancies.  My plan is to be vigilant about protecting myself and to call the Dr. if I see any signs immediately.

WTF?  It's a $15 flu shot.  Yes, we don't have "free" healthcare in the U.S, but I hear too many horror stories about Canadian medical care.  I live just south of Vancouver with many of my co-workers living in Canada.  All of them still have U.S. health insurance because if it's not an emergency, they have to wait months to get health care, so they come to the U.S.

And while I believe getting the flu shot is a personal choice, when experts like the CDC recommend it for pg women because of the high risks to the baby, I'm going to get one-not because "America makes it's money off of healthcare."

Wait, what? can you elaborate on how getting the flu is somehow related to autism?

There's a small link between having an elevated fever for several days while pregnant and having a child with autism. An article came out a few weeks ago, but the authors themselves stated that the relationship could be spurious. Basically, any kind of in utero inflammation can be bad for fetal brain development.

I worked in a NICU a couple of years ago and met a baby whose mother got the flu, slipped into a coma, delivered via c-section while under and ended up dying. So I got my shot. It's not 100% protection, but it's better than nothing.

ETA: I don't add that last part to be a fearmonger. Just explaining why I personally decided to get my vaccine. I understand I could still get the flu.

I didn't get the flu shot - mostly because it basically gives you the flu itself (as in, the side effects are sometimes just as sh!tty as the illness itself) - and though I did get the flu I didn't think it was a huge deal.  My fever was low and lasted one day, and it was mostly just body aches and fatigue.  It wasn't fun, but it wasn't a big deal either.  I slept.  I hydrated.  I took Tylenol.  And here I am with an immunity, the same as if I'd gotten the vaccine.

I didn't get it for me or DS, because I didn't feel the need to. We take our vitamins, we eat healthy. No need to take DS to get a shot and get him all upset over it for nothing. Besides, it seems pointless because most of the people I know who have gotten the shot get sick more often. I mainly didn't get it though because I didn't want to stress DS out, last time he had a shot he kicked the nurse in the face, and was upset and out of sorts the rest of the day. Not worth it in my mind.
