Birthday Party

Wondering what most people do for a 1 year olds birthday party. If you are going to invite your friends with kids do you have that party and then a seperate one with family or just one party? And what do you do at it since a 1 year old is obviously not old enough to know how to play games and things? I have only taken my son to one of these parties but we arrived late so I don't know what they did during the main portion of it. Just looking for ideas on what to do!

We discussed this on the March 2012 board. We mostly discussed themes.

I think we will invite a few close friends (our family is pretty far away). We plan to make a few cakes (one "smash" cake for fun). We are going to keep it pretty simple.

I've been to several one year olds bday parties over the years, my friends babies, and sisters babies, etc...even one recently which is a mom of a one year old in my building.  I'll share what I've seen from around here anyways.  It typically seems pretty common when inviting more than just family to have a several hour window of time, say 1-4pm and have people come by when convenient..most of the people have babies/toddlers with different nap times and this allows them a chance to come with a well rested child.  Family, usually tends to come and stay for most of the whole thing.  You plan a time in the middle for opening presents and having cake and the rest of the time is play time, chat time, drink beverages, etc snacks/food..something really simple.  The babies/children will have fun socializing OR being clingy to mom..moms are generally preoccupied and games would be really hard even for the adults to pay attention too..but then again, I guess it all depends on your guest list.  I'd love to hear other peoples experiences too, and what they've seen or done.

We are just having one party and inviting all close friends and family.  It's going to be quite a bit of people since my family is HUGE but I think it's easier to just throw one party then do two parties.  I'll only have to clean the house once, prepare food once, etc.  I can't imagine having two parties even if they are both small.

Every first birthday party I have ever been to there has not been games.  The kids just played with each other while the babies got passed around from adult to adult.  The adults had a drink and socialized.  I don't think you need to worry about planning specific games or activities.

We are having a house party with almost 50 people (friends and family).  I live in a rowhouse, so we are doing an open house type thing from 1-7.  So people can come by when they want and leave when they want.  The house is going to be really crowded, thats why we are doing it like this.
