I've been to several one year olds bday parties over the years, my friends babies, and sisters babies, etc...even one recently which is a mom of a one year old in my building. I'll share what I've seen from around here anyways. It typically seems pretty common when inviting more than just family to have a several hour window of time, say 1-4pm and have people come by when convenient..most of the people have babies/toddlers with different nap times and this allows them a chance to come with a well rested child. Family, usually tends to come and stay for most of the whole thing. You plan a time in the middle for opening presents and having cake and the rest of the time is play time, chat time, drink beverages, etc snacks/food..something really simple. The babies/children will have fun socializing OR being clingy to mom..moms are generally preoccupied and games would be really hard even for the adults to pay attention too..but then again, I guess it all depends on your guest list. I'd love to hear other peoples experiences too, and what they've seen or done.
