second hand crib mattress

This may be a strange question...but the crib we have for our baby was given to us by family. It is used. I will obviously be sanitizing it and all the bedding. However, do I need to buy a new mattress? I don't want to if I don't need to. I'm just thinking about the health if the baby. Or will it be fine since it is always going to have a sheet on it?

Depends...most of the mattresses I've seen have a plastic type surface?  It's not like an adult mattress. Very easy to disinfect.

Mattresses are one of those things I would buy new. Aside from the sanitation issue, you want that mattress to be really firm and they tend to get softer over time.

If you can wipe it down, I'd totally use it if I were you- but I'm not picky or a big worrier so take my opinion with a grain of salt ;)  DS's mattress looks and feels brand new.  It was quite firm to begin with and does not seem to be any less firm after 2.5 years.  We will definately be using the same mattress for DD now that DS is in a full-size bed.

We're getting a crib from my BIL and I plan on getting a new mattress. But their crib has been in the garage for a few years.

I saw an article a while ago that a used mattress may be better because it doesn't have all of those new mattress chemicals. The "study" may have been ridiculous, but I have heard even if you buy new you should air it out before you use it.

I would totally use it. Every crib mattress I've ever seen was covered with that plasticky cover, which means that disinfecting it will be a breeze. My DD used her crib mattress for her crib and her toddler bed, and it was no less firm after 3 years (now she's in a twin).

Ok thank you everyone. I'm glad I don't need to buy a new mattress. It has a plastic cover so I can disinfect it

I was given a crib mattress from my cousin and it was perfectly easy to wipe down because it has a waterproof cover. And it was also perfectly safe, as it was a firm foam mattress exactly like what we were looking for anyway. Foam doesn't lose firmness like a spring mattress does. DD has been using it for almost two years.

Ditto PPs, I would definitely use one from family unless it was really old. In addition to the mattress, I had another waterproof cover on it, so that's another barrier too. (Easier for middle of the night messes).

My best friend gave me her sons old mattress. He barely used it felt brand new. He coslept for the most part and still does. He's 3. It had a plastic cover. I just disinfected it and its worked great!! DS is 2 and I put it in his toddler bed. Its still in great shape and I plan on using it with my DD.

As long as you know the previous owners, I would def use it. Mattresses do off-gas fumes and chemicals and new ones should be aired out prior to use. Getting an in-good-condition second hand mattress, besides being cost effective, is better for baby's health
