WWYD - induce and have your doctor or wait and not

So my due date is Monday, and my doctor recently told us he is going on vacation for 2 weeks on Monday....

We have an appointment and we were considering asking to be induced this weekend so that we can have our doctor.

I originally wanted to avoid induction at all costs, but the thought of a stranger delivering my baby is stressing both my husband and I out.

Would you just wait it out and take whatever doctor is there, or would you choose to get induced guaranteeing that you will have your doctor?

I have no experience with this since I am a first time mom but I would wait and just deliver naturally. My sister went into labor on NYE 2 years ago and her dr (who is also my dr) was not on call that night. She wound up delivering my nephew by his partner whom she had never met, and had a wonderful experience and it was totally fine. The nurses do most of the work anyway! Similar situation, my best friend goes to a practice with 6 OBs. She loved all of them except one. Who was on call the day she went into labor? The dr she didnt like at all-and turned out after this dr. delivered her son she had a great experiece and now loves her!

How far passed your due date will your dr let you go before getting induced? Maybe he/she will be back by then anyway...Dont be nervous. THey have all delivered millions of babies. If your primary dr was concerned he would suggest inducing you before he went.

My due date is next week Saturday and my doctor is inducing me the day before. I have been having really bad contractions for four weeks now. My other option was to wait until a full week later when I would be at 41 weeks. After talking things over with my doctor we are going to do it the day before my due date. I personally feel much more relaxed now that there is an end in site and knowing that my doctor will be the one who is there with me. I am still however, hoping that this little man decides to show up sometime on his own between now and then though.

With my first I saw a whole group of OBs and the one that was there when I delivered I had never met before - luck of the draw. It didn't bother me - unless you're having a c-section, the OB doesn't really do too much until the baby is ready to come out for a vaginal birth. To me it's NBD who is there as long as they know what they're doing when it counts. I personally would not induce because that just scares me and it's more important to me to wait and let baby come on it's own.

It's a personal decision, you should do what you're comfortable with.

your doctor will likely be there to catch the baby and that's about it.  And he could possibly get held up somewhere and not make it in time anyways.  I would just wait and try not to sweat it.  Plus, there's no guarantee that an induction started on the weekend will mean your baby is here before monday!

The doctor is seriously only there for the delivery...the labor and pushing is all assisted by really great nurses. They don't call the doctor in until the last minute. Not sure if this helps in your decision making.

I have heard a lot of statistics about how you are more likely to have a csection if you are induced (because your body may no be ready).  That was enough to scare me out of it.  Good luck to you!

Literally you'll push until baby is crowning, the nurse(s) call the doctor and he/she comes and catches the baby and sews you up. And as others pointed out just b/c you're induced on X day doesn't mean that's when baby will come and it will also increase your chances of a C/S. If you're willing to take that risk then go ahead. GL either way!

All of this, the Dr. delivering the baby is there for all of what felt like 5 min. She "caught" the baby, got the placenta out and did all of her checks and then I didn't see her again. my Dr checked on me later when she got in for the day. If there is no medical reason for you to induce then IMO you shouldn't just for the sake of trying to have your Dr there. I understand you being nervous, my Dr's office has several Dr's one of which is a male and that was a little scary, but honestly when you're in the grit and in the middle of pushing you are not going to care as long as your baby is delivered safe and sound. Good luck!

My first induction took 3 days. My second took 1 whole day. You STILL might not have your doctor for delivery if induced that day. Take your chances and let your body do what it was meant to do and take your chances on the doctors you'll get. Can you do a meet and greet with the other doctors?

I'd wait. I was induced and then in labor for 28 hours which almost resulted in a csection until my DS finally came out. Also same as others, I didn't see my OB at all during those 28 hours, it was all nurses and a resident OB checking me. My doctor literally came at the last minute for the pushing.

I would be worried that you'd go in Saturday and wouldn't even deliver until Monday or something and wouldn't have your doctor. Is he working this weekend too?

I wouldn't induce unless there is a really good reason that you need to deliver with your doctor, and unfortunately, I don't consider familiarity/personality in the really good reason category.  For example, I had a friend whose baby was breech and there was only one of the six OBs in the practice that would deliver her vaginally...the others would opt for an automatic section.  In that case, I might consider inducing, but other than that, I would wait until your body is ready.  As pps have mentioned, inducing leads to a higher risk of a section.  I would rather have a vaginal delivery with an unknown OB than a section with "my" doctor.

If I were very close to my due date and favorable, I would induce. Having my own doctor is really important and I know it's not a guarantee, but in that kind of case, I would choose to have my own and be induced.

I had a really long labor and stalled out for quite a while, many doctors would have called it a day and done a section. My doctor never mentioned it and patiently waited into the night. If history repeats itself, I would rather have my patient doctor than someone who doesn't know me or my history at all.

IMO te ony reason for an induction is medical necessity. For you and your doctors convienience is not a good enough reason to put you and your baby at higher risk.

All of this.  My OB office has 5 OBs and a midwife.  They like you to try to see each one through your prenatal appointments so you can "get to know them" but honestly, when the time came, I didn't "know" any of them and it was just fine.  If you have anything specific that you talked to your OB about, you could always put it in writing as a sort of birth plan just so it's clearly communicated to whichever OB delivers.

this... I read in the O&G medical journal that elective inductions on FTMs doubles your risk of c/s... most hospitals have about 15-25% c/s rate so you're looking at a 30-50% chance of ending with a c/s... those statistics would cause me to wait...

plus IDK what your birth plan was, but if you weren't planning on getting the Eli, an induction will make it harder for you to avoid this

It's really not bad. In the heat of the moment, I didn't really give a shiit with DS.

I think it's pretty ridiculous to get induced just because your doctor will be on vacation for two weeks. Give your baby as much time to develop in your body, and focus on more important things than who is going to be on the receiving end of your vagina.

I was leaning towards waiting it out anyways, but you ladies definitely convinced me.  Went to our appt today and the doctor was so sweet.  He to;ld us that as much as he wants to be there he would never put me or baby through induction unless completely necessary.  He also hugged both of us before we left since he will be leaving on vacation before we see him again.  It sucks that we got so close, and now he wont be there...: (  However we did meet another doctor today which made me feel a little bit better.

I would wait. Inductions are connected with higher csection rates and having a doctor I know wouldn't be worth a possible csection to me.

DS1 was delivered by a doctor I had never met before and everything was great. It wasn't the easiest delivery and I was happy with how patient she was with everything. Just because you haven't met the doctor before doesn't mean that they don't know what they are doing. Arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible so you will feel confident no matter who is delivering your baby.
