RH negative factor

Good afternoon ladies!  I just received a call from my doctor yesterday regarding some of my test results from my first appointment.  A lot of it wasn't really good news, my high blood pressure pre-pregnancy is caused by elevated liver functions or something and I am high risk for preclampsia.  That is something we knew to be worried about beforehand.  I also found out I am RH negative, and my blood type is officially O-.  This came as a shock as both of my parents were to have been A+ and my mother always told me I was A+.  There is positives to this, I can donate my blood and it can be used for any blood type.  However the negative part is the RH negative factor which I was not prepared for.  I didn't receive the shot before getting pregnant, and I'm just wondering if my body is going to build up antibodies, when does this occur?  Has anybody else had this problem?  I get the shot at 28 weeks so that we don't have an allergic reaction when our blood types meet, in case they are not RH negative.  My partner is AB+ so there is a chance that they have the RH positive factor.  If I am RH negative, wouldn't my mother have had to be RH negative as well?  If so, why was she never informed of this when I or any of her children were born.  My aunt (not by blood) was RH negative and pregnant at the same time as my mother and had to have the shot administered.  Sorry for the long bout of information, I am just wondering if others have had any experience with this and if it is something to really be worried about at this time?

I didn't receive the shot before getting pregnant, and I'm just wondering if my body is going to build up antibodies, when does this occur?  You do not need the shot before you are pregnant.  Your blood will not build up the antibodies.

If I am RH negative, wouldn't my mother have had to be RH negative as well?  If so, why was she never informed of this when I or any of her children were born.  No.  That does not mean she had to be Rh-.  Rh- is recessive which means that each of your parents and the Rh- gene underlying their dominant Rh+ gene.  The two recessive Rh- genes met up to make you, Rh-.  Because your mom is Rh+ she never had to worry about the shot.

In addition, any woman who is Rh- with a partner who is Rh+ will have to have the shot in case there is fetal Rh incompatibility.  I hope this helps.

I am RH- my mother is not. None of my pregnancies were an issue for it. Always just had the shot if any bleeding or birth happened.

I just got the shot at 28 weeks, stick in the arm and all done. Also after birth I will get the shot too.

Thank you ladies for this information.  This really helps to put my mind at ease lol.  This should also help the grandparents out, as they were worried something was wrong when they had me.  I should let my sister know though, cause perhaps she was a lucky one who inherited this as well.

What the other ladies said :)

You'll get the shot, and everything will be fine. I am RH-, and its not a big deal at all.

Rh factor only becomes an issue with subsequent pregnancies. After the first one, your body would naturally build up an immunity against that antibody causing a potentially lethal situation for future pregnancies (erythroblastosis fetalis aka hemolytic disease of newborns). RHOGAM (the shot) prevents your body from building up an immunity to these antibodies (in essence, making your body not care about them).

I'm A- and my husband is B+, so I already know I will be getting RHOGAM.

Modern medicine is wonderful :)

Same thing happened to me when I was in the hospital for my mc. My mother told me I was A+ as everyone else is in our immediate family. I found out I am actually O+. I was like....ummm can you randomly change blood types haha My mom couldn't believe it.

i agree with PPs... usually there isn't much to worry about. You do need to make sure that you call your OB and tell them you are RH- any time you have an accident (such as a fall, which you should call for anyways). I had a couple of these small incidents and they gave me rhogam as a precaution

I am also RH negative. You don't have to have a rhogam shot prior to getting pregnant. You will have one at 28 weeks and then again after delivery.
I've had 2 miscarriages and had to have the shot after both of those and 2 successful births and had the shot at 28 weeks and after delivery with both of them. It's really not a big deal :) Everything will be fine.

Usually when parents are both negative or positive, so is the child, but mutations do occur. Get that shot and you will be set, no worries.
