Asking doctor for progrestone testing

After 5 months of tracking my cycle with ovulation kits and the Clearblue fertility monitor (and I started temping this last month, which confirmed ovulation with temp shifts, etc) I have continued to have a short luteal phase (it started as 5-6 days, and has not increased and been holding steady at about 9 days for the past few months). This seems to short to me and I would just like to have my progesterone levels tested to make sure I dont have an issue.

Have any of you asked for this? Is there a certain day this test should be done after ovulation? I think I saw 7 days somewhere? I plan to bring my charts, etc to my appointment, but I wasnt sure if any of you had touble getting your doctor to let you have the labs done and if so, what you did to convince them. Im assuming my doctor wont give me a problem, but just in case I want to be prepared :) Thanks!!

I just spoke with my doctor about having a short luteal phase (mine has been between 9-11 days the past few cycles) and she is having me come in for progesterone testing at 6 DPO. I was worried that I was jumping the gun because we are only on cycle 4, but she told me to come in and we looked over my charts and discussed it. She thinks I have a luteal phase defect so I'm going to get the bloodwork done. Your doctor will probably want to sit down with you and see your charts before deciding on anything,

Since the temping this cycle confirmed a short LP, I would call and ask for one since they have been short for a number of cycles. I would tell them exactly what you told us about your cycle tracking and ask if you can get an order to get your progesterone levels checked to confirm ovulation or a possible luteal phase issue.

I've mentioned to my doctor twice about spotting for 5-6 days before my period begins (it's been going on for 5 months now). The second time I mentioned this to her I asked her if she thought I could possibly have low progesterone, and she agreed that it was a possibility and told me to come in to have my levels drawn at 7 dpo.

ETA: I was surprised (and relieved) that she told me to come in because she is generally of the mindset that testing won't be done until the year mark.

I went last week to my doctor to ask for progesterone testing. I don't have the same concerns as you - my luteal phase seems to be an okay length, but I always have up to 6 days of brown spotting before AF, and several days after. While this could be normal for me, I read in numerous places, including TCOYF, that this could indicate a progesterone issue, and I wanted to get it checked out.

My doctor said she wasn't concerned about progesterone at this point, and wouldn't order a test for that. She did order a pelvic ultrasound to check for any lesions or cysts that could cause my spotting.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Thank you all so much! Im glad to know other doctors also have agreeded to having you run labs before 1 year. I made an appointment for Tuesday so hopefully it goes well. If she refuses, I may just order the labs myself (I work in medicine) to make sure, but I would prefer we are on the same page :) Thanks again!

You don't wait a year if you have obvious issues. A short LP is an obvious issue.
