NYC/Brooklyn: Any Low Cost Suggestions for a Shower?

Does anyone have any ideas about where one can do a not too unreasonably priced baby shower for 40-50 people in NY, Brooklyn or Queens? I'm open to something at a restaurant but prefer to stay away from hall-type places. I've checked a few restaurants and I'm getting quotes $2,000 and up which is out of range for us. Below $1500 with food or below $1000 and then we get the catering done would be really ideal!

With that many people you are most likely looking at 2K + for that area.

I know you are saying no hall, but my suggestion would be to look for a Knights of Columbus or a rec center that rents rooms.  They usually charge a nominal fee to rent a room and then you can cater in food from somewhere else.  Some of the K of C's even make deals with local restaurants for discounts on catering.

If you must have it at a restaurant, you have to cut your guest list, sorry!

Thank you Helen! You might be right! It is very pricey here. We are trying to look around our neighborhood in Brooklyn and maybe over in Queens for a not so trendy restaurant that might have a more reasonable rate. I'm a little jealous of people who live in places where friends and family have relatively huge houses to host in and nice weather for outdoor events. That kind of stuff is nonexistent here except for the very wealthy :/

Try http://www.essexnyc.com/parties.html

The timing is odd, but you can't beat their price for NYC. At 45 folks you'd be right in your target once you add in tip and tax.

Im in the same boat, but we just chose to keep the list under 20  so it can be held in my condo (I'm not hosting my own -,my two hostesses are from out of the area and flying in)!

For that many ppl I think you got some good quotes.  I think the KoC is a good choice or maybe a church rec room.
