Bummed that insurance doesnt cover pump

Well, GHI *DOES* cover it if you have a medical reason- they said anything that prevents a normal BF experience, like prematurity, cleft palate, etc.  I pray that I won't have any of these reasons to get it covered, but I was excited at the idea of getting a new pump as mine is 3 years old. Guess I shall buy the replacement parts for my old one.

Did you ask about having a prescription from your doc? I think just going back to work would 'prevent a normal BF experience' bc you can't BF while working (if that's the case). Ask about the Rx. My doc said she would write me whatever I needed. Good luck!

CHeck you policy wording.  I think they are mandated to cover breast pumps.  Like PP said, it may require a prescription and ordering from a special place.

And most are covering only manual pumps. I was very disappointed.

I just asked my doc about it yesterday. She said usually women will just say they need a pump due to a "latching problem" (aka I want my free pump!) and she'll write a prescription for that reason.

I will see if I can get one for a "latching problem," but GHI said the only reasons they'd allow one were: prematurity, neurological disorder, genetic abnormality, cleft lip/palate, surgery, or prolonged infant hospital stay.  Guess it doesn't hurt to try, but in any case, it appears that it can't happen until the baby is born anyway.  :(

And they said it's a rental of a hospital grade pump for 60 days, and can be renewed for 3 months as necessary with no limit.

Mine said they only cover a manual pump (BCBS Florida), but I may call the medical supply company and see what they say. I already bought the Medela Pump In Style Advanced, but have held off on opening it just in case.

I got the script etc and ordered it from a medical supply store and then my insurance didn't end up covering it for some reason. I asked the medical supply store how much it was if I just kept it and paid out of pocket and it was 37 for a PISA. So might be worth looking into that! The mark up on those things is apparently RIDICULOUS.

My insurance company covers 100% if there is a problem... NICU or cleft palate, for example. I might try to finagle it and see if my doc will write a script post-partum due to bad latch or something. I really can't afford to buy a pump and I'm afraid that this might keep me from breastfeeding as long as I'd like to.
