1st night home....how do I sleep?

We just got home from the hospital tonight. LO and us have been at the hospital since he was born Sunday...he had/has jaundice. His levels finally lowered and now we are home. We sent him to the nursery while we slept every night mostly because he was under the bili lights and now I'm scared to sleep while he sleeps....it's so dumb. But any advice to helping me realize he will be okay would be great!

You will. It will be restless, but you will! Have him sleep in a pack and play in your room right next to your bed. That way you can check him as many times as you need to.

The first few nights were tough for me too. I had LO's bassinet right next to me and constantly looked in on her. I think it's natural for a mom to be worried. I did sleep a bit but was able to nap while she slept during the day.
Good luck! It will get easier!

It's hard, but as PPs said, have LO in a bed next to yours and that way you can check on her as often as you need to. Just make sure you nap when LO naps during the day too. It does get easier to sleep, just takes a little while

For te first week DH and I dragged our futon mattress into Cj's room and slept on the floor next to his crib. Once we flt more comfortable we moved back to our room and we have a video monitor which is a huge relief to me because I can check on him without ever leaving the bed.

It's not dumb, it's just what we do as mommies...worry. :P you won't sleep, you'll check on LO about a million times, and before you know it, it's morning. Its something you just adapt to. Good Luck! It will all be ok. :)

Completely normal! But trust me, you will sleep...maybe not first few days, but you will. Exhaustion is mother natures way of helping us through that new mommy fear. It helped me to set an alarm for every two hours (my LO was on a 3.5 hour eating schedule--my DH and I alternated so we each got a fairly good stretch of sleep). This way I knew I wouldn't sleep through his cries. We also kept him in our room. I heard every breath, grunt, etc. but he was close enough for me to check on.

Good luck and congrats on your LO's arrival!

The only way I have ever been able to sleep when mine came home is an Angelcare monitor.  It was worth every penny since it gave me peace of mind knowing something would wake me if the baby wasn't breathing!  Hope you were able to sleep!!

We survived the night. My DH is awesome and took a feeding shift too so I had a good round of zzzzz's then. I know it will get easier. Thanks ladies!

Not soundly, unfortunately! Our first night home, I was constantly up making sure DD was breathing, hadn't spit up, etc. During the day, I slept right next to her cradle so I could constantly look at her. Every teeny noise made me jump up and check her diaper, if she was hungry, etc. but. DH and I slowly got over that in the  next few days and were able to not freak out if she slept three hours straight or made baby noises in her sleep. Its normal, and it will get better. Soon you'll be begging her to sleep so you can get some sleep of your own! I definitely ditto PPs and recommend having her sleep in your room. If you're BF, you may want to consider a cosleeper. We use the Arms Reach Mini, and it makes middle of the night feedings easy, plus if she's fussy, a lot of times DD just needs a pat on the belly, which I can do without getting out of bed.

My DS had jaundice too and this is what we did for the first few weeks. I was so paranoid that I would just stare at him to make sure he was breathing until I finally drifted off to sleep. In fact for the first few nights we straped him into the changing table attachment (we dont have a bassinet attachment) so that he was right in front of my face.

I was so bad about this I made DH and I alternate shifts to constantly be awake for the first four nights. DS is EBF so DH would wake me for feedings and I ended up so tired. You get used to it. DS now sleeps in a bassinet in our room and I use a night light so I can see him from my spot in the bed. I still check him often even though he only does 1-2 feedings at night now.

It's not dumb...believe me. :-) Pretty sure the first night home was the worst for me. I didn't feel well, and we were out of our safe hospital bubble. We have a video monitor and I pretty much watched it all night. I was obsessed thinking that she wasn't safe, or we were doing something wrong. It was a rough night. They have gotten better since (3 weeks pp now), and we all have adjusted.

Good luck to you and your new family. Try to get some rest
