birthing ball

(also posted on natural birth board)

did anyone use a birthing ball before/during/after the birth? I am going to buy one soon and just curious to see what size people liked. Most charts say I should get  65cm. (I'm 5'7") However, I'm leaning towards getting a larger one since I don't think I will use it for working out much and more for sitting, bouncing, laboring and pacifying baby after s/he is born. (husband is 6'3" and would probably be more comfortable sitting on a larger one.) Any thoughts?

I bought one when I was pregnant with my daughter and just went by the size chart on the ball. I was told not to recline at the end of my pregnancy (I guess it can lead to baby being posterior) so I sat on the ball sometimes instead of my recliner. I didn't want to use it while in labor and didn't use it much after my daughter was here. I still think it's a valid purchase though if you think you might want the option of using it while in labor.

it's the same as an exercise ball, right?? if so, you want it to at a height where your legs/knees make a 90 degree angle when you sit on it. It makes a great workout tool for after baby as well :)

I'm actually sitting on a exercise/birthing ball right now at my home computer desk while I type this :). It's easier on my bum and base of my spine and I can bounce while I type, which gently stimulates lymphatic fluid flow and drainage as an added benefit (the same motion as rebounding on a mini trampoline). Apparently it also helps with correcting your posture and takes pressure off of your spine because you're not planted on a solid chair. It feels a a lot comfier to me, and keeps me mindful of not slouching, so I'm all for it. :)

I didn't actually use it for labor but for about a month up until labor I sat on the exercise ball every day and would bounce/rock/etc to kind of stretch things out.

There is probably no correlation but for the first 5 months of DD's life bouncing on the bouncy ball while we held her was the only way to get her to calm down and go to sleep. :-\

I've had several friends say the same thing about their little ones. Part of the reason I don't mind buying one (espcially since they take up so much space... ).

I used one during labor for DS. My water actually broke while I was sitting on it! I loved it. I had one during DD's pregnancy and used it sometimes. I plan on getting one this time as well.
