Micro IVF questions... (siggy warning)

Hi everyone! I've been on this infertility roller coaster for the last 8 1/2 years and I'm ready to get off! DH and I have finally decided to do IVF. It was a big decision for us. Not sure why, it wasn't all a financial issue, but none-the-less, we're finally there! We are looking at a June start date with our own RE. However, I have been researching and came across a micro-ivf (different than mini somehow. Different meds I believe. No clomid/femara. All injects like with conventional IVF). A clinic in NYC does it. My main question is has anyone had success with mini or micro IVF?

Our reasons for even considering it would be (hopefully) no frosties. We really only want one (two if it happens) more child. I'm not sure what we'd do if we did conventional ivf and had embies left to freeze. I realize that it might not work the first time, we've thought of that. But, what if it did. Then, we're not sure what we'd do. We know we'd never donate, throw away, etc. Also, I love the idea of not overstimulating with a lot of meds. I have always responded amazingly well to all the meds I've taken, so that is a real concern for me. My ovaries like to produce eggs. My endo just makes it impossible for them to do anything worthwhile on their own!

While I will leave it to our RE to make the final decision, I'd still love to hear from others what they'd do in this situation. Am I nuts for considering this? DH likes the cost. However, with travel, it won't be that much less! I'm really leaning toward it, but I need to see if anyone has had success or not and get some real experiences before I make my final decision.

*****siggy warning******

We did micro IVF through Sher. The thing is their "micro" IVF is only micro in cost, everything else is still the same. It's basically a lower priced packaged deal they only offer to patients who they think will be "easy". The qualifications were to have no male factor, be under 35, AMH above 2 I think, FSH and estradiol levels had to be normal as well. Because the levels are good they don't typically prescribe as much meds either so you save some money there too. But the meds themselves are the same as anyone else...we used Lupron, Gonal-f, and Menopur.

I stimmed for seven days and then was ready to go. We had 12 mature eggs and 10 fertilized. In the end we had no frosties though we would have loved some. Let me know if you have any questions And I'll try and help. Good luck!

I did a mini ivf in oct 2012 and it was a fail. It's basically clomid pills and if you grow follicles then you do some shots and retrevial. I would ask your RE if it would be worth trying. Not successful for me but I have different issues than you. I am looking at doing the micro dose lupron flare next time maybe and it may not be right for your situation so again would have to ask dr. Both are said to be used for someone with DOR like me so who knows!!! Good luck!

I personally wouldn't make your decision solely based on frosties. I believe only 30% or so of people get lucky enough to have frosties. You could always choose to only put the best one back in and choose not to freeze any left. But, then, what if implantation doesn't occur? Wouldn't you want frosties if you could then you wouldn't have to start all over? Remember that the success rate for ivf is 50% or so ... Just saying that if you were lucky enough to have a frostie it certainly would be nice in case the 50% chance of the first not implanting did happen... Just my 2cents.  Good luck to you.

Laurakat81: That's who we were researching doing it with in NYC. I was very impressed with the idea. Other than my endo, we have no other issues. Hormones are all normal and DH doesn't have issues either. By looking at your siggy, I'll assume it worked for you?! Congrats! And, your description of the micro did help. Was the clinic you used close to you? I was just wondering how much we'd have to plan on for travel costs, staying over, etc. My husband is really leaning toward the micro ivf. He likes the idea of not having to use a lot of meds and having to freeze too many is appealing to him. Also, how does the calendar for the start day work? My own RE just lets you start whenever your are ready. I get that the Sher is a larger practice, so timing is easier for them. But, did you get to pick your start time or do they? Since I teach, I'd love to have a summer start, especially with traveling.

As for not having any frosties making our decision, it's not our entire deal breaker. However, we need to be responsible. We already have one. One or two more are all we would be able to financially afford and still have something of a budget left! We would not ever donate or throw them away, so we'd be left to put them back and try for more. It's our own ethical decision. It might be different than others, but it's what we believe is right for our family. With the micro, if it didn't work the first time, we could still afford to do another and be right where we would financially if we did conventional ivf. The bigger decision maker, however, is not using a lot of meds. Because hormonally, I'm fine, it really has never made sense for us to use a lot of meds to get a ton of eggs. I usually end up with 3-4 with injects with our iuis anyway. So, with this, it might be just a few more and we're okay with that chance.

Thank you everyone for your advice! DH and I talked a little more about it last night and we'll be calling our RE and asking if he'd consider doing a micro ivf. I know he won't, but you never know unless you ask! So, after reading these, DH feels more confident that it's a great choice. Plus, I'll get to visit NYC! It's a mini vacation thrown in and I'm okay with that, too!
