Confused about nursing clothing

I received a gift card for ON for Christmas and was going to buy some nursing clothing.  But what is better?  Nursing bras to wear under regular shirts, nursing tanks, or nursing shirts? And with a nursing tank, I've notices some you unhook, while others you just pull aside. So couldn't you just wear a regular tank and pull it aside?  Do the tanks provide enough support? And are nursing shirts/tanks more like maternity shirts in the stomach area?  Too many decisions for this ftm-help!

for me, I just got extra stretching regular tanks and wore a nursing bra under it (or no bra if I was home, but I would be sure and wear nursing pads as well). I also liked button down shirts when I was out of the house. Nursing shirts, like nice blouses or regular shirts, are really nice if you can get them. But in all honesty, as long as you have a comfortable shirt you can either pull down or lift up, special nursing shirts are not all that necessary. Invest in nursing bras, pads, and covers if your out and about. But everyone has their own personal preferences. :)

I wouldn't waste money on separate nursing clothes.

With DD, I wore a long tank under all my clothes (I bought a size up) that I pulled down to nurse.  The tank would cover my chub and I'd hold DD under my shirt and just wear a regular nursing bra.

My girls are quite large so I need the support when out and about, but I found nursing tanks comfy at home for sleeping in.

I pretty much only wore nursing tanks ever. My nursing bras were a waste of money.

When I was a ftm, I bought one of each because I didnt know what would work best.

The first two months I ended up living in my nursing tanks. I loved them. I wore them under other shirts when I was out. Try the ones at target!

I never liked the nursing shirts. Drove me crazy! But my friends swear by them.

I'm a 40D when nursing (regularly a 38C) so my preference is nursing bra + tank + shirt over that. This time around I have also purchased 2 second hand BOOB nursing tops off of eBay to try out.

I also have one Bravado nursing tank that I will wear around the house. It's not supportive enough for me to wear out.

Word of caution: expect things to get stretched out/ruined. I wore some regular tanks to sleep in and just pulled them down to nurse at night. The necklines were all stretched out after a few months.

me too - I have 5-6 nursing tanks and wore them under everything. I had 1-2 nursing bras and hated them.

I had a couple nursing bras but when I was just at home, I often wore tanks that had built in shelf bras (non-maternity).  They'd hold the nursing pads in place just fine and it was easy enough to pop a boob out to BF.  I'm sure I'll do the same this time around.  I never liked the nursing clothes because they did fit like maternity tops, imo.  I was so over maternity tops and just wanted to be wearing normal clothes again.

I have found the most useful like 2 or 3 nursing bras, a couple of nursing tank tops, and a couple of nursing nighttime bras. As far as clothes go just stock up on comfy shirts with a few buttons for easy access. In public I used the nursing wrap so you really cant see anything underneath if I just had to pull my shirt up.

I'm a nromally big chested gal.  I remember being told to stay away from underwire bras as they can cause the ducts to clog.

At night or when I was home, I wore those bed-time nursing bras.  I'm not sure what they are called, but they were just like t-shirt material that  I was able to insert the pads into and made it easy to quickly whip out a boob to nurse at 2am.  During the day I usually wore a t-shirt or something over it, but at night, that's all I slept in (well and a pair of pajama pants or something else lol.)

During the day adn when i returned to work, I just wore clothing that I could maneuver to get the pump into. I didn't buy any specific nursing clothing aside from a few nursing bras, but then again, I am someone who dresses for comfort most of the time.

Dont spend a lot now.  wait until you are sure what you want and then go shopping.

Add me to the nursing tank list. I wore them under my clothes so I could pull my sweater or whatever up and still have my belly covered. I liked the Target ones best, bought some expensive Bravado ones and hated them.

I did wear my nursing bras a lot later on when I was nursing less frequently and as the weather got warmer I didn't really want an extra layer anymore.

But I would only buy maybe a few tanks and/or some sleep bras before the baby is born since they're S/M/L not sized. It's really hard to guess what your bra size will be.

I always just wore a nursing bra and regular tops that were low cut or button up.

I lived in nursing tanks. They aren't created equally though. My favorites are Target's Gillian OMalley brand. Motherhood shrunk and stretched, so they were too short and not supportive. I never tried any others because Target's worked.

Nursing tops, IMO, are just overpriced and hard to manuver. I generally just wore a nursing tank under another shirt.

I still haven't found any nursing bras that I really loved.

For me I used nursing bras and tanks.  I did try the ones that pull to the side and found them as a total waste of money was the material stretches and when you are not nursing you show way more boob than you are comfortable with.  With the nursing tanks I would just layer them under a regular shirt so that when I had to pull my shirt up my belly was covered.  When I was home I pretty much just wore that.  I am very big busted (right now a 36F) and found that nursing sports bras were very comfortable to wear to bed at night too as the extra support helped save my back.

Truely it is 100% personal preference.  Remember when you have your baby you are still going to have a bit of a belly for awhile (9 months up 9 months down).  However Old Navy tends to run quite large in their nursing tops.  I generally wear a Large in most of their shirts but in a nursing tank I wore a Medium (big boobs and all).  Be sure to READ the reviews on that product as people will tell you really how large it runs.

 Good luck!

I prefer nursing bras, unless you plan to alternate shirts every other day. You will be vomited on, a lot. Possibly peed and pood on, too.

I just wore lots of shirts with stretchy necks and whipped it out whenever baby was hungry.

I personally preferred nursing tanks with a regular shirt over them. I found the glamour mama (I think that's who made them) great and I have large breasts (34DD when not pregnant, bigger when pregnant and nursing). They were supportive enough to not need another tank and reaching around a regular tank would have stretched out and destroyed regular tanks where this was designed for nursing and held up.

I was able to nurse incredibly discreetly in them even in public (my daughter would *not* cooperate with wearing a cover/blanket), especially if I paired a t-shirt of the same color over so you could barely see that my shirt was lifted unless you were looking.

To each their own. I like nursing clothes because i was always nursing no bottles etc. I wore a lot of BOOB brand my first go around with a nursing bra underneath. I am a 34gg while nursing so tanks are not option.

With DS I wore nursing bras and tanks at first, but my nipples were too sore for a bra so this time around I am just wearing nursing tops.  When I went back to work I wore both the nursing bras and tanks, but I liked the tanks better because they covered my stomach.  If you get the right nursing tank it is supportive enough.

This is something that you'll want to figure out as you go.  You will quickly learn what your preference is.  I hated nusing tanks, they did not offer me enough support (I am a 38D and stayed that size throughout pregnancy and nursing).  I used nursing bras with tanks that could easily be pulled to the side.  I also got a bunch of "Undercover Mama" tanks which are basically like tank tops without straps.  They clip to your nursing bra and turn it into a nursing tank!

I wore a nursing bra and a nursing tank everyday and then if I went out I just put a cardigan over the tank so I could nurse easily. I didnt have the money for nursing shirts so that worked well for me :)

I'm a big fan of all three.  Couldn't do without my nursing bras and tanks and I've found some nursing clothes that are great.  But I plan to nurse for about two years, so good nursing clothes are a good investment for me.  The nursing clothes I have do NOT have a maternity belly, though most are on the stretchy side.  I have tops from BOOB, Milk, Motherhood (my least favorite) and Momzelle.  And a new dress from Milk that I can't wait to wear.

I'd suggest that you don't stock up much before baby is here.  Try a few things and then shop afterwards based on what you like best in practice.

I'd also recommend the Bravado BodySilk seamless nursing bra.  It isn't cheap, but it is very comfortable and well worth the money to me.
