Prenatal Vitamins Taste Like Fish. UGHHHH

I just woke up so nauseous at 3am burping up a fishy after taste from the prenatals my OBGYN put me on. I am so grossed out and I think I'm going to puke. I have been a vegetarian for 18 years and I know the omega 3's are important for the baby so I have been choking down the vitamins every night and have to hold my nose because they smell so bad. But this is the first time since I started taking them that they are repeating on me. I am so nauseous right now and don't think I'll be able to lay down or I'll puke.

Does anyone take a prescription vitamin that has omega 3's but doesn't taste/smell like this!? Help!!!

Just puked my brains out and I still feel sick. I need new vitamins. Anyone have a recommendation?

I had an aversion to all prenatals with my first. This time I took them for a bit then it started again. My doctor okayed 2 flintstones as a replacement. I find that they are much easier to take. Hope this helps. GL

Sorry they are giving you trouble! You might want to try taking them with a meal and not right before bed? I take mine in the morning with breakfast and I do sometimes smell the fishy odor but not too bad.

I have the vita fusion gummies. They taste like candy. Last pregnancy all prenatals made me vomit. These have been a godsend

I had been taking the vita fusion for a few months and loved them! But at my first OB appointment she looked at info on the bottle and switched me to the OB Completes. I think mainly because of the Omega 3's. I had mentioned I was a vegetarian and I eat very little fish and I think that's why. My nutrionist said flax seeds have tons of omega 3's so I am going to see if I can go back to the gummy's and eat a flax pack once a day.

I haven't thrown up once yet (I am 9 weeks) so I guess I'm lucky but last night was BAD and I still feel pretty awful!

I know it's good for the baby so I'm feeling guilty but I cannot take those vitamins anymore.

I forget the brand of mine but they are prescription and made without any fish or fish oil or fish by products. Ask you OB. I believe they are called prenatal first or premier. They're known as 'the little one'. Tiny blue capsule.

I would recommend taking them with a meal instead of before you go to bed. The food will help settle the vitamins in your stomach.

The smell and taste of fish makes me want to vomit, so I found some DHA supplements at CVS (right next to the prenatals) that are made from non-fish sources. Fish isn't the only thing that has Omega-3's.

Agreed. When I asked the doctor if I can just have flax seed she dismissed it. I'm definitely switching though. I'll take the gummies tonight until I call the Dr.'s office tomorrow. YUCK!!!!

Nature Made makes an Omega-3 vitamin that is made with Algae oil. (It says "100% Vegetarian Omega-3" on the label, rather than "Fish Oil" or "Flaxseed Oil"). It is what fish eat that gets the Omega-3s into them! I take them along with my prenatal because I don't like fish at all. I can't find it everywhere, but it is out there. It's a little priceier than the fish oil, though.

I agree. I don't mind taking my prenatals this time. I asked my OB if they were ok since they didn't have iron and she said my bloodwork looked fine so I don't even have to take a supplement.

I take one from Target and the DHA is not from fish. (Which I have read is the better choice due to mercury concerns).

Yes, I used to take these and they were great! The Vitafusion gummy vitamins are good too but they don't have iron so you should add it if you take them. I also agree with the advice above re:taking your vitamin with food at this point. It is best if you take it on it's own for absorption purposes but you need to be most concerned about just keeping it down right now. Take it with food until the nausea is better.

I like my rx and it includes a plantbased DHA too. It is Prenexa.

Also, making sure that your fish oil has an enteric coating can help. This means that it breaks down in the small intestine, not the stomach. It helps with the fish burps. For a higher quality omega-3, if you really can't stand the fish, I'd go with algae instead of flax.

I know this is a blog, so take that for what it's worth, but it does a pretty good job of explaining why algae over flax if you can't do fish: http://www.foodprocessing.com/articles/2012/algae-dha-healthy-as-fish-oil.html

I take the vita fusion as well along with a iron pill as the gummies don't contain iron. I enjoy but they make me crave gummy bears yum!
