School me on carriers and slings

15w2d here (my ticker is wrong).

DH and I are starting a registry and were looking at the selection of baby carriers out there.  He will be a SAHD for our LO and anticipates having many opportunities to baby wear.  He immediately gravitated towards the Baby Bjorns ("They look manly.").

However, what do we need to be concerned about?  I've heard snippets here and there about "crotch danglers" and hip dysplasia.  Then again, the descriptions for Baby Bjorns say they're ergonomically correct...?

 What am I missing?

Baby Bijorns are IMHO an expensive piece of junk. If you're willing to fork out that kind of money I'd invest in a Beco, Ergo, Boba, Mei Tai, Pikkolo or liliebaby.

Here's a good site that reviews and explains the different types and brand of carriers. You can also rent carriers to try out to help make your decision.

DH likes our ergo, if you get the performance or sport in black I think it's masculine enough.

Yeah, Baby Bjorns are crotch-danglers, and the baby won't be positioned ergonomically in the carrier.  Show him some Ergos instead - the ones without prints are plenty manly, and they're generally considered more comfortable, too.

We have liked different carriers for different stages.

Ergo was great early on b/c DS was 6 lbs. / 8 oz. at birth and took FOREVER to get to 8 lbs., so we could use the Ergo with a newborn insert. Downside is that the insert was hot, especially in summer, and when his eczema was flaring up he did not want to be bundled up in all that stuff. And around 2 to 3 months he would not let me put him in the Ergo at all.

Around 4 months I tried him forward facing in the Bjorn and he loved it. (We have a Bjorn Active) I think he was at the stage where he just wanted to take everything in. Still didn't like the Ergo. But right now he is nearing 15 lbs., and it is tiring to carry him in the Bjorn because all the weight is on your shoulders and the small of your back.

So I decided to try the Ergo again a few weeks ago and since he is going through a clingy phase he is pretty happy facing me again. And I am way more comfortable since more of the weight is on my hips. DH likes the Ergo too except he has trouble securing the chest strap on his own -- you need to have pretty flexible shoulders!

We also have a Moby that has never worked for us ... I think the problem is that I am very short-waisted ... so DS can head-butt me in the nose when he is in it, and he doesn't sit low enough to support his shoulders. Also the Moby has zero appeal to DH.

If I were to do it over again I might look at getting an infant sling for the early weeks, but I'm glad that we had both the Ergo and Bjorn so that we could continue to baby-wear through different stages.

EDIT: there is a Bjorn model that has a hip/waist belt, I would recommend looking at that (Comfort Carrier) , but the web page says you can use it starting at 13 lbs.

I agree. Do not waste money on the Bjorn. It will seem fine for maybe a month or two. Then they kill your back and are known to not keep baby in proper alignment. You also aren't really supposed to face baby out for a variety of reasons so don't let that discourage you from buying one of the betterconstructed carriers.

Check out the Beco similar to Ergo but baby can face dad and face forward. Also, show him a Baby Ktan. It is our favorite and very simple to wearit is sized, so it would be for Dad only. Cheaper, too.

Alrighty then!  Bjorn is deleted from the registry.  I see "Ergo" all over these Bump boards, so I looked up their products and selected the Ergobaby Sport carrier in black, along with the infant insert.  Hopefully this will meet our needs!

In my experience, a baby bjorn may be fine in the beginning, but once the baby gets heavier it is uncomfortable to keep the baby in the bjorn for any long period of time.  I also have the moby wrap and maya wrap, but I never could make them work right and it was way too frustrating.  This time around I want to get an ergo or beco.  Everyone I know raves about the ergo but I am leaning toward the beco since baby can face both out and in.

I was just going to suggest an Ergobaby Sport in black. That is what I registered for and I think it looks plenty manly. Plus people say it is cooler in summer because it has more mesh (thus the "Sport" in the name).

It might not look manly, but if you plan on babywearing regularly, I highly recommend a Moby Wrap! I had an 18mo when DS2 was born, and it was a lifesaver! Since it's just fabric, nothing digs in anywhere, the baby's weight is distributed across both shoulders your back and hips. It does take a few times practicing, but there are plenty of videos on YouTube to watch on various ties positions.

Since I am not the athletic type or a sporty dresser, I liked how the Moby looked, as well. Good luck!

Ditto. FI and I both wore DS in the Moby when he was a newborn. Once he exceeded the weight limit, FI got an Ergo, and I got a Boba.
