? For SAHM who EBF

Do you pump and if so, when?

I'm on maternity leave for the next two months so I've been home with the baby and EBF. He's still eating every 2 hours even at night so by the time he's fed, had a diaper change, some light activity and put down to sleep there's only about a half hour for me to eat, clean, shower, or nap myself.

It would be nice to start to pump to build a supply so MH could give him a bottle in the evenings so that I could get some stuff done (plus I'll need it for when I go back to work), but was wondering when the best time to pump was. If I pump when I put him down to sleep will that be too close to his next feeding? Worried that I'll empty my breast and there won't be enough to fill him up at his next feeding.

How old is your LO? When DD was around 3 weeks old I started to pump to have bottles for when we're out of the house and also to freeze some. I only pump once every couple days right after a feeding, but this time I am taking 9 months off work so I don't need to build up a stash. With DS, I went back to work when he was 3 1/2 months. When he was around a month old I started pumping. Eventually, I got into a routine where I would pump twice a day and my supply got really good. Once I went back to work I had like 600 oz.

If your LO is still eating that often, I don't see how you could pump much. Once he starts spreading out feedings and sleeping longer at night that would be a good time to start.

My youngest had a bad latch on the one side, so I started pumping when he was 4 days old and I pumped only for 3 days to relieve myself. With doing that, I was able to start a little stash and I now get around 5-6oz each time I pump (total).

Since going back to BFing as well as pumping, I nurse first thing in the morning (around 6:30-7), then I pump around 8:30-9am. He gets a bottle of my milk around 9:30a. From there, he eats every 3.5-4 hours, and I pump when he eats. If I nurse him at feeding time, I pump around 1-2 hrs afterwards.

HTH!

My three sons.

I started pumping around 4 wks old. I also pumped like a crazy person, every 3 hrs or so after LO ate. Building up a stash is all about supply/demand. I had over supply for a while, but it worked out to build my stash. I had about 300 ozs last week when i went back to work. Now, I only pump 2-3 times a day.

I typically nurse at night when he goes to bed or will pump right after a nursing session if he doesn't empty the breast.
Remember that your body will make milk as long as there's something sucking it out so you will not run out of milk for your child even if you pump right before nursing.

I will start pumping in a week or two to cover a medical procedure for which I'll be gone a few hours one day at the end of this month. After that, I'll probably start pumping once per day. I will only go back to work PRN, but I pumped a ton with DS and ended up having a size able freezer stash I used later on to feed to him after we weaned, which was really nice.

To be honest, I loathe pumping so I pretty much ignored it until LO started sleeping a longer stretch at night. Since I'm pretty full after her first good stretch I will nurse her on one side and pump the second. I'm getting 3-4 ounces consistently each night. I should have over 100 oz when I go back to work in 3 weeks.

After my LO eats I pump what is left in the breast. I read on Kellymom that if you let the machine continue pumping for about 5 minutes after it's empty, it'll signal you need more milk and you'll begin making more than your baby takes in so they'll be some remaining to pump. I started doing that and it works out great.
