Law limiting parents' name choices

http://news.yahoo.com/icelandic-girl-fights-her-own-name-074758814.html

first few paragraphs:

A 15-year-old is suing the Icelandic state for the right to legally use the name given to her by her mother. The problem? Blaer, which means "light breeze" in Icelandic, is not on a list approved by the government.

Like a handful of other countries, including Germany and Denmark, Iceland has official rules about what a baby can be named. In a country comfortable with a firm state role, most people don't question the Personal Names Register, a list of 1,712 male names and 1,853 female names that fit Icelandic grammar and pronunciation rules and that officials maintain will protect children from embarrassment. Parents can take from the list or apply to a special committee that has the power to say yea or nay.

yikes! this makes me think twice about moving to another country lol

I can think of some cases where that would have been useful in America.

While some parents are nuts for naming their kids things like Hashtag. I still don't like this.

I think we should have a Names board project of coming up with no more than 2000 names for each sex that are acceptable for use in the U.S. Each additional 'y' and every new spelling of Jaden require a separate request for approval.

Flame me if you want... but I can't bring myself to really, fully hate on this.  I feel it is a bit of an extreme use of government, but really, some of the asinine things that children are named here in the U.S. show the probable cause for this law.

It's Icelandic.  I am sure it is not hard to pronounce in Iceland.  Huh?

That'd be like saying a German, Italian, French...(etc, I think you get my point) name is hard to pronounce.

Even though it seems strict, the list is almost 2000 names long. I'm sure you could find something acceptable from it. However, we do live in America - Home of the Free - so we shall have to encounter all the fake, made-up, you-neek names and spellings.

I agree with this, they have plenty to choose from, I currently live in an area that has a hoard or horrible names, mostly made up, smoosh names. You-neek spelling.  Honestly I think its embarrassing.  In a lot of cases it makes the area you live in seem very dumb.

But we do live in a free country, and its the parents right to name their daughter Jissapoint (Yep heard this one at the store today, not sure on the spelling though).

Seriously? Jissapoint? Eww.

My DH is a German citizen and I have known about Germany's naming laws for some time. I can't say they bother me. I also have a friend whose Mom was American and Dad was German. Her name is Jennifer (accepted by German authorities ca. 1971). When her little sister Kimberly was born (in about 1974), the German authorities were perplexed at the name and did not want to allow it because it was not on the list. So they got stuff from the US showing what a popular girl's name it was here and the authorities said, "Oh, okay." So Jennifer and Kimberly grew up in Germany just fine.

it just seems really odd to me because some of the names they don't allow are fairly common here... apparently the letter C isn't in their alphabet so most names that start with c are not allowed... play  this level of gov't control freaks me out.... plus the US is such a mixture of cultures that it would be almost impossible to come up with a list that fit all or most of them...

Well, yeah.  Iceland is a small, ethnically homogenous country with a long history, much longer than ours.  This does not surprise me or particularly bother me; if I were Icelandic I'd be proud of my heritage and want to preserve it by using Icelandic names for my children.  Obviously this law wouldn't fly here, and I'm glad it wouldn't because DH and I come from different backgrounds and have different considerations in naming our children, but I think there's plenty of room in the world for America's ever-evolving cornucopia of names and Iceland's more traditional naming guidelines.
