Is Maeve too similar to Mary?

DD1 is Mary and we are having our second girl in April.  We like Lucy a lot but I don't know how I feel with it also being a 4 letter name that ends with y.  (To make it worse our last name is only 4 letters!) We're also considering Maeve, but I was wondering if you baby namers think Mary and Maeve are too matchy for sisters.  Maeve is a new consideration for us so I haven't had enough time to decide how I feel about it.

Oh and even worse, my name is Molly (not a nn for Mary in my case).

Mary is such a ham!

As a mom to Mary and Martha, I don't think it's too close. Of course my Mary goes by Addie [a nn from her middle name Adeline] and my Martha goes by her full name [first and middle Martha Rose].

I think the names are fine together. My only concern would be the repeating long A sound. FWIW, I like Mary and Lucy together even more. We also have a 4 letter one syllable last name and I think it sounds great.

Yes, sorry I think it's too close.  Pretty name though!

The 4 letters thing doesn't bother me at all.  Love Lucy and Mary as a sibset.

I like Maeve and I like Mary (DD is Mary Jane) but I don't like them together.  The spirit of the names don't go with each other imo. I much prefer Lucy and Mary together.

Why did you choose Mary?  If you are looking for other suggestions, the rationale behind Mary might help :)

Thanks for all the feedback so far. I am definitely looking for suggestions. We picked Mary because of a variety of reasons. 1. I liked the idea of a name that is definitely a name but isn't too popular and isn't too out there either. 2. My husband and I are Catholic and met at the Univ of Notre Dame named for Mary 3, Mary is my mom's name.

I think part of the reason we are having a hard time with DD2 is because Mary had so much meaning behind it I'm having a hard time finding a name with as much meaning.

I don't think the two are too similar. Mary is such an iconic Christian name, and Maeve is a figure in Celtic mythology. Two great girl power names! Although with so many lady Ms in the house, you may find your partner stuttering until he can find the right name to call you. I grew up in a house with Jennifer, Julie, and Joyce, and you'd have though my father had a speech impediment. (My sister and I were often called "Jennalie" and "Julifer".)

Although I really like Maeve I do think they are too close.  Oddly even though Lucy and Mary are short and end in Y I prefer that as a sibset.

Based on your response, I would NOT use Maeve.  I am Catholic too... I didn't want to ask you straight out.  Here's my thought--- Mary is such an important person in Catholic faith and has such strong ties to the Church that I'd want my subsequent children to have Saint names that are tied to their faith too.

My pet Catholic name which DH wouldn't let me use because he has a good friend w/the male spelling is Frances.  My eldest daughter is Mary Jane... I thought Frances would be an adorable sib set.

Other Catholic names we considered (Sib to Mary Jane is Elizabeth whom we have always called Betsy):

Cecilia, Bridget/Brigid, Felicity, Joan, Josephine, Lucy, Margaret, Rose, Lucy, Frances

Thanks for the reply. Maeve was originally a mn option. we recently considered switching it to fn and going with a Catholic middle name but I think I'll stick with Maeve in the mn spot if we use it at all.

Thanks everyone!

I'm so glad I'm not in your position OP, because I would not be able to decide...although most of me is saying it is too close, but at the same time, it's not....

That being said, like some pps have said, I do like Lucy and Mary together more than I like Maeve and Mary.

I am not a fan with matching first letters so I vote for Lucy and Mary. You could do a longer form like Lucia or Lucille.

Mary Alice or Mary Francesca was the girl name we had picked out for our last pregnancy.

I really like Maeve, but I think Lucy goes better with your DD's name. I believe you can also spell Lucie like this (5 letters and no y).

I love the name Maeve, but I feel like it should be with other more gaelic sounding names (like Siobhan, or even Claire perhaps).

I feel like Mary should go with another more classic sounding name.
