Don't temp when you wake up?

I heard this advice the other day and am wondering if any of you have seen evidence of this and think it worth changing my routine.

I haven't been temping since Christmas but am going to get started again this week. A friend of mine told me that she was taught by her NFP instructor that temping when you get up every morning becomes inaccurate over time. She said that your body adjusts to your wake up time and will begin warming up before you wake, affecting your temps.

This instructor's solution was to have my friend wake up to temp in the middle of the night, which is fine, but is that really necessary? I feel like even if your body becomes accustomed to waking at the same time every day, you will still be able to observe a thermal shift consistent with ovulation.

Thanks, ladies!

I've been temping first thing in the morning for a year and I've never had a problem. It is suppose to be your resting temp, and if over time your resting temp goes up it would be like that for your whole cycle, so your chart would still be accurate.

This is exactly what I thought and what I said to my friend! She disagreed and thinks its why my chart is so ugly.

It makes sense to me that even if the adjustment over time was apparent, you could still catch a thermal shift. But she said that your body will warm enough to make a thermal shift undetectable.

Wouldn't your body, then, in theory, start warming up before midnight, expecting you to be getting up then?

ETA: Not to mention, then you're interfering with a good night's sleep, and that's not exactly healthy or beneficial.

I think if you're waking up at the same time in the morning, then your body will have made the same adjustments it does every day, so your temps would be accurate. It would be different if you temped at 2am one day, then 7am the next maybe, but if your body warms up every day, and you temp every day at that time, then why wouldn't it be accurate?

FWIW, when I temped the first time around, I took my temps at different times, though always around 6-8am, and I was always able to see a clear thermal shift. There were even mornings I forgot to temp before I got out of bed, and even then they were fine.

Yeah, I've been temping for well over a year.  You can definitely still see a shift.

That advice is dumb.  I charted for 2 years and always saw a temp shift and my temps also did not rise over time.

Yeah, Hello!

I am the Queen of Charts, duh!  There's only room in the throne for one of us.  ;)

ETA: OP, have you tried temping vaginally?

I haven't, but I suppose I could start. Is temping vaginally supposed to be more reliable or accurate?

If your temperatures are rather rocky, it could help.  Sometimes rocky temperatures are a sign of mouth breathing.  When you temp vaginally, you take that possibility out of the equation.

omg that sounds like HORRIBLE advice. Personally my temps usually work out even with very different wake-ups from day to day thanks to my toddler. I don't know why people would voluntarily wake themselves up in the middle of the night. And according to her logic wouldn't that become less accurate over time? (Also, I agree with your logic -- if the body warms you up ahead of waking up, then it would do so consistently....)

If I had to wake up in the middle of the night to temp, I'd never get the 3 hours necessary to make the temp accurate.  My chart would be all over the place.  I think this NFP instructor needs to take FF's charting lessons!

I wanted to post this back up, just because I thought of something this morning. Last month was my first month temping, and I was one of "those" people who woke up before the alarm went off for whatever reason, expecting the alarm to go off. My alarm is set for 5:30, I would wake up around 3:30-4.  I would doze and drift off and on back to sleep for the next hour or so, until my alarm did go off or I finally gave up and got out of bed. My temps were still pretty consistent, and I still saw a shift for O.
