At 9 Mths Old - what foods to offer?

Our LO turned 9 mths yesterday, currently she is drinking 32 ozs formula, eating 3 3.5oz gerber purees, approx. 20 gerber puff snacks and 2ozs of water per day.

We are first time parents and I am not sure where to go from here. What kinds of food are you all giving your LO's? I seen that at this age some are giving toast, cheese...etc...I guess I didnt relaize I could be giving those foods...

Would love to hear what you are giving?

Thank you :)

We give them everything.

At about 7.5-8 months we started giving them more and more softer things in bigger chunks to gum on. With practice they have gotten really good at it.

Warning: they will gag for the first while. Give it a few seconds before you react, it's how they learn. My husband hated this but they are both still alive and we never had to intervene for choking.

Everything healthy that we are eating. We usually do a piece of toast in lieu of puffs now since it's healthier and she can handle it. Plus her favorite is 12 grain!

My LO basically eats what we eat...but modified a bit so it's super healthy and doesn't have eggs, nuts or too much dairy and isn't spicy. Our pediatrician gave us the ok to do this and move away from baby food at his 9 month appointment.

I will give DD2 whatever we are eating that I think she can handle with no teeth. I won't give her eggs, peanut butter, or honey, but I have seen other posters here that do so and their kids are fine. Before the age of one, PB can be difficult for LO's saliva to break down and can cause a choking hazard, regardless of whether or not there is a nut allergy. Honey before one can cause botulism. Cow milk doesn't have the all the iron that children under one need, so keep them on BM or formula until they are one, but you can start introducing water, and cut down on the amount of formula you are giving LO. 32 oz seems like a lot, but I guess it depends on how much you are giving each bottle. I think the goal is to get LO's calories and nutritional needs met by the food and not so much the formula anymore. When you transition to milk at a year, 16-24 oz I believe is the norm. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. DD2 is currently taking 3-4 6 oz bottles of formula daily, with water in a sippy cup. Some people give juice; I don't, but it won't hurt LO if you decide to.

Rowan would have nothing to do with purees at all, so we basically went straight for finger foods. We started with Cheerios, then yogurt. Now she eats little mouthfuls of whatever we're having, but likes the following in particular:

Broccoli, seasoned rice (any kind, but especially the stuff from the Greek place), mashed sweet potatoes,  quesadillas, cucumber slices, hummus (on little bits of pita bread), edamame, tomato, celery, and especially and most of all, pizza crusts which we just cut off our pieces and she gnaws on happily.

Give what ever you are comfortable with at this stage.  My son had steak, shrimp, broccoli and peaches for dinner tonight.

Since DD has decided she wants nothing to do with baby food anymore, I have been giving her things that she can gum pretty well (she's just now cutting her first two bottom teeth).  She does great with puffs so I started giving her plain cheerios instead.  She's had small pieces of bread, ground beef, chicken, various softened vegetables, peaches, noodles, scrambled eggs, etc.  Her pediatrician told me she can basically have anything we want to give her as long as it's not a choking hazard.  He encouraged us to experiment with all kinds of different foods and spices.  It might make her a less picky eater as she gets older.  She still gets most of her nutrients from formula (weaned herself off of nursing completely by 8 months), but at some point she needs to learn to eat solids so it's good practice.
