To the mom's giving toast ...

Do your LOs have teeth??? DD2 just cut her two bottom teeth (you can just see them poking out). I get the whole mashing thing with the gums; she does just fine with Cheerios, but I was wondering about toast without teeth because my inclination would be to give her the whole slice and let her gnaw on it. I haven't because I didn't know if she would get a big hunk in her mouth and gag without being able to chew it. It would more than likely be a honey wheat or whole wheat, so would be "meatier" than say a simple white bread. Overreacting???

I haven't given toast yet (my mom did though, and she seemed to do ok), but DD does get waffles. She has no teeth yet, and I just give her the Eggo cinnamon toast waffles. They are perforated into 4 squares (maybe 2" by 2"?) and I give her one whole square at a time. She does great with it! Sometimes she gets a big chunk, but she has not problem mashing it.

DS didn't get his first teeth until he was over 14 months old, and I always felt like I couldn't feed him anything but purees....so I didn't. I'm finding out differently with this one, and probably wouldn't have even tried it if she didn't grab a piece while I was splitting one up for DS and shove it in her mouth before I could stop her!

That said, I would never leave her alone with it, I make sure I stay there and watch her, just in case.

My LO has 4 teeth but I don't give him whole pieces of any food. I tear up toast or anything else into small pieces for him. He gets practice grabbing foods that way too.

DD has no teeth, and I've done it both ways.  I still can't decide which way is better.  If I tear it up, those pieces need to be pretty small or she'll stick a whole chunk in her mouth like you're saying.  She does pretty well with the big piece, but she usually just ends up tearing little pieces off with her fingers since biting doesn't work out so well.  I would try both to see how your LO does.

My LO only has the two bottom teeth (they are well in though) and we just recently started giving her the toast just tore into 2 or 3 pieces and she tears them up herself, either with her hands or she bites with those little teeth and tears it off that way. I give her 12 grain wheat bread (it has sunflower seeds and things in it) or home made white.

No teeth at a year?? That was like DD1. I thought she would NEVER get teeth!! Thanks ladies. I will give it a try and hopefully she will be a champ and not gag!

DS has 4 teeth, but I tear up toast for him because he tended to gum the large pieces and then I would get all freaked out about him choking or it getting stuck to the roof of his mouth.

My DS just had his first two teeth barely pop thru (top front two). I cut his toast into strips. He usually shoves the whole strip into his mouth, but he manages it.

DS only has his two bottom teeth but eats most anything diced manageable for him.  Last night for dinner he ate steak, shrimp, broccoli and peaches.  It's pretty amazing how tough their gums are!

ETA: Toast was a first food for both of mine neither of which had teeth yet.  I cut the toast in half and put butter or whatever on it.  They both managed very well.

as soon as my daughter had her first 2 teeth (around 8 months) i let her try toast. she actually did really well with it (granted it was my toast with butter) and she really really liked it. at first i would hold the toast for her so she wouldnt get big chunks, but she actually did better when i gave it to her and let her do it herself.if she started to choke we'd just fish it out. whole wheat is best, and thats what she would eat.

I gave DD some of my English muffin the other day.  I broke it up into small pieces and let her eat it as finger food.  My mom also gave her a piece of toast yesterday.  DD loves it.  DD does not have any teeth but does really well with finger food as long as you break it up small for her.  She's actually been rejecting purees and wanting to feed herself more.
