Cold meds while cycling?

I have a feeling I'll be getting a cold any day now because my husband is very sick with one. I'm currently on BCPs and Lupron for an FET in Feb and my RE's nurse said that if I do get sick, I'm only allowed to take sudafed or claritin (which confuses me because I thought claritin was for allergies.) Of course I am going to follow her advice, but I'm curious what the rest of you have heard from your RE as far as safe cold meds during lupron/stims/cycling etc?

ETA: Any tips for staving off a cold ahead of time? I just emailed my nurse about Emegen-C, Airborne, and zicam. Ive never taken any of them but I'm seriously desperate.

4/23/13 - Matched to adopt five new embryos!

I don't have any advice on cold meds, but I would try drinking Emergen-C along with whatever med you end up taking. It was the only thing that helped me when I was last sick. I hope you & YH feel better soon!

Im not sure while stimming but when I was pregnant before my m/c RE said I could have Claritin but not the D and no sudafed. It is for allergies but its still has a antihistamine in it which will dry you up if you have drainage. I was never told anything about while stimming though. My RE never says to change anything until transfer when PUPO, until then anything is fair game, caffine, alcochol, ect..

I can only tell you that the only restrictions I was given applied during stims, not during Lupron/BCP's.

I've honestly never asked because I haven't been faced with that as of now....however, I do know that for pain meds (and I'd imagine cold meds would apply too) I can only take products that have acetaminophen (sp?!?) because of my clotting disorder and being on Lovenox. Makes things tough since Ibuprofen is my saving grace, LOL

Hope you don't get sick though!!! Ask if you can take Zicam....that knocked the flu out of me when I was sick the week of my wedding a few years back :)

Thanks. I'm starting to get that foggy head feeling which might be a side effect of lupron, or it might be this evil cold trying to take hold. I've never taken Emergen-C but I'm desperate to avoid this thing since I know they won't let me take any drugs that might actually help if i get it. I emailed the nurse about Emergen-C so crossing my fingers! They seem very strict! :(

I agree, I always heard that tylenol based products were okay but IB Profen type ones were not. I just was hoping that Nyquil or Mucinex D were okay since they are my saving grace during colds. I'm honestly terrified thinking about the lack of sleep I'm going to get over the next week if I do indeed get sick and I can't take my normal meds.

I just emailed the nurse about Emergen-C but I'll ask her about zicam too. Great tips!

My nurse to me to not take anything but Tylenol without consulting her first. I have felt like I am getting a sinus infection on and off for the past few weeks and I've been using Ocean spray. It is a saline nose spray and it has really prevented a ton of sinus infections. And it's only a few dollars. GL!

Mine said claritin & tylenol and that was about it, NOTHING with DM. I fought a nasty sinus infection during my first IVF.  I took vit. C to try to get ahead of it.  I hope you don't get it and hope your DH feels better soon!  Everyone I know has had some sort of yuckness lately.

Gargle w/ warm salt water and drinks lots of OJ is my usualy non-medicine home remedy.  That is just my home remedy - I don't have any advice on what an RE would say to that.

Me:33 TTC since 2008 Feb08: ruptured Ectopic(surgically removed right tube and ovary) Oct12: Began seeing a Fertility Doctor Dx:Anovulation, Provera to force period, clomid 50mg, Day 12 ultrasound showed no follicles/no ovulation. Dec12: Day 3 Antral Follicle Count; ONE, FSH also jumped from 8.4 to 24, increased clomid dosage to 150mg

The last time I cycled I came down with the flu.  I was told Tylenol cold and flu was ok to take!  I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for all the responses! The RE said that Airborne or Emergen-C was okay so I stopped at the drugstore at lunch and just chugged my first Airborne. I'm going to be doing the Neil Med sinus rinses like crazy and pray for the best. The idea of having a cold in addition to lupron and BCP side effects and not even being able to use my saving grace of nyquil and mucinex D makes me cringe!

DH and I are both fighting off nasty colds right now too, and my nurse told me that I can take over the counter meds, so I'm on sudafed & Musinex right now. We are only in the BCP/aspirin stage of our IVF, but she said that its okay until we get up to the ER/ET phase. That's when I have to start being more cautious about what I'm taking.

Really? No mucinex or Nyquil? That stinks. Zicam has helped me shorten the length of stuff but it didn't eliminate it completely. Try to get some rest, as much as possible, and drink tons of fluid!

TTC #1 for about 3.5 years
ME: 37, PCO, immune issues?, teflon uterus (my added diagnosis)
HIM: 38, Perfect. (Showoff.)
Month before starting Clomid, spontaneous pregnancy. m/c at 7 weeks and D&C.
Four months of Clomid, one IUI, with Intralipid each cycle: BFNs all
IVF 1.0 July 2012 -- Lupron, bravelle, menopur, estrogen, progesterone supps, intralipid. 14 ER, 14 fertilized, 1 blast transferred, 2 on ice. BFN
FET 1.1 -- 10/2, transferred our 2 blasts. Lupron, PIO, estrogen, baby aspirin, prednisone. BFN.
IVF 2.0 December 2012 -- Bravelle, Menopur, Ganirelix, Prednisone, Metformin, estrogen, progesterone supps. 22 eggs retrieved on 12/14, 17 mature, 15 fertilized. OHSS anticipated so ET cancelled. 3 embryos frozen.
Broke up with old RE. Moving on to new dude. Maybe the change of scenery will be just the trick for our frosties. On BCPs for possible April FET.

I agree about using the sinus rinses...it'll help to wash out whatever critters that might be about to wreak havoc in your head. :)  Also wash your hands like crazy and you might just escape getting sick.

I'm hoping that the boatload of vitamins that I now take will help keep me from getting sick in the middle of shots/ER etc this month!
