Gender ultrasound early

Hello!!  My husband and I have decided to go to a special pregnancy spa called "Becoming Mom" to find out the baby's sex early since my doctor will not do the gender ultrasound until week 20.  The Becoming Mom place will do it at 16 weeks.  Has anyone else had their ultrasound done this early and how accurate was the result??  And yes, I am that impatient....lol

Well, what your doctor does at 20 weeks isn't a "gender ultrasound." It is an anatomy scan, to make sure your child is developing on track and is healthy. yes, sometimes they can determine the sex of your child at that time. I think it is a total waste of money, but that's all you.

This.  FWIW, there were a bunch of posts here and on my BMB a while back where people had early elective U/S and were told one sex only to find out they were having the opposite sex at their actual A/S.

Personally I think spending all that money on extra ultraousds form those boutique places is a waste of money. Sometimes they cant even tell what the baby is and sometimes they tell you one thing and it ends up being something different. I would just wait it out and wait for the A/S scan that your dr does its not meant for a gender reveal but they will normally try to look if you want to know.

Well that was dreadfully rude of you.  I understand that 20 weeks is for other things, just giving the difference in time of the 2 ultrasounds.  I would appreciate positive responses only....not negative feedback on the choice I make to find out my child's sex.  I like to prepare....not that I care what the baby will be; we will be happy either way.  Leave the rudeness to yourself please and the negativity!!!

I went to baby's first image when i was 14 weeks and the lady there said it was 100 % accurate , If she could not detect the sex at 14 weeks i would of came back in two weeks for free so it was a pretty good deal! Luckily I found out i was having a girl and it has been confirmed i am having a girl :) . Good luck ! I was very impatient as well lol.

There wasn't a shred of rudeness in my response. Just because I didn't encourage you to waste money on a scan that is unnecessary, doesn't mean I was negative.

Is this better?  "OMG yessssss you need to go today!!!!!  I only spent $400!"

 Lame.

If you want to pay to get an u/s, pay for it around the same time your dr would do the anatomy scan. The reason they wait till 20 weeks is because all the parts will be developed by then. If you find out the sex too early, it may not be what they say it is. So maybe at least schedule a follow up later? Or hopefully at your a/s they'll be able to get a good look.

With my first son I found out at 15 weeks, it wasn't an elective U/S, it was one ordered by my doctor.  This one I had one at 13 weeks, I didnt even ask if they could tell cause I knew it was so early,  found out at 20 weeks.

A lot of early U/S sex determination is wrong though, so keep your receipts at least till its confirmed at your A/S.

Personally I wouldn't spend money on an elective U/S, but I've had 4 U/S already, I might feel different if I only had 1, or if they couldn't tell the sex when I had my A/S.

I think you came to the wrong place then.....not to be rude, but that's just how it is here. You don't get to choose what responses you get, you just get what other people honestly feel like saying. I don't think the PP's comments where rude at all, so you might want to be careful what you post, otherwise you'll get eaten alive.

What the fluck are you talking about? There was no rudeness in any of the responses.  Nobody criticized your choice.

Well, I guess you woke up on the wrong side of the bed today.  It is not costing me anywhere near $400.....that's crazy.  and trust me, the way you responded was rude but perhaps you are like that all the time so for you it is just normal.

The sonographer at my CVS at around 13/14 weeks seemed to know the sex for certain (and he was right), so it is possible to know early. However, he is a highly trained, skilled medical professional who does dozens of them a day at a perinatologists's office.  Some of the people who operate the equipment at those elective places have very little training and aren't going to be as skilled as someone who works for an OB or Peri.  Also, there is some question about the safety of these boutique U/S places.  Honestly, I don't think there is enough to plan this early in the pregnancy that it would be worth having that test so early, but that's just me.

I'm not going to it myself but if it's something that will make you and your SO happy or excited, it's not a waste of money. Go for it! The excitement of seeing your baby with the ultrasound would be worth it to me, but it's my first baby and seeing it move the first time was the coolest thing I've ever seen.

However, I would just go into it knowing there's a chance they won't be able to determine the gender. 16 weeks is still pretty early. In fact, my doctor isn't doing an anatomy scan until 22 weeks.

I would agree!

Hopefully she wasn't just posting so everyone would say "Have fun! Your doctor is stupid for making you wait for your 'gender' ultrasound. Hopefully he won't waste your time by checking the baby's heart, brain and other organs. It'll just be fun, and he'll tell you what color to paint the nursery!"

But yeah, what a lot of outrage over nothing!

Holy heck, we're pregnant again! Please stay here with us little Otter.

We have a heartbeat! 138 beats per minute and measuring right on track. Ultrasound 11/7/12 showed heartbeat in the 160s. Negative MaterniT21 results ... Found out at Anatomy Scan we're Team Blue!

Lost our first (EDD 07/23/12) after finding out at 12 weeks there was no longer a heartbeat.

LOL, according to my ultra sound tech, a lot of women act like this.  All they care about is the sex of the baby and have no interest in the rest of it.  She doesn't tell the sex till the very end for this reason.

Just have some patience.  It's only a few more weeks.  If there's  a chance that it's too early, it wouldnt be worth it to me.  I'd hate to get all excited and possibly buy things, and then find out it's the opposite a few weeks later.  Pregnancy is one long wait for the next milestone, so patience is necessary.

The anatomy scan is so important for so many reasons.  It was pretty amazing to (luckily) hear that the baby looked perfect, and then at the end we had the pleasure of finding out the sex.   I'd rather do it all at once.

I worked with a lady who did this. She went in a week before her A/S and they told her it was a boy and everything was fine. Then she went to her A/S and they told her she was definitely having a girl and the baby had a hole in her heart and was growing in the 15 percentile.

OMG, really???  I don't care if the baby is a boy or girl and of course I want to know if my baby is healthy; however, there is nothing wrong with knowing the sex of the baby.  It's like you are all so high and mighty b/c maybe you don't want to know the sex of your baby.  I'm not even having any of the testing done to find out if the baby has Down Syndrome b/c I am pro-life and will love my baby if he/she has Down Syndrome or not.  Please don't start judging me, you have no idea who I am or what I am.  Literally, I just asked what people's results were.  THAT WAS IT.  Everyone get off of their high horse!!!!!  and read before you post, it was an innocent question.

We are going to a place like this tomorrow at 16 weeks.  If they can't tell the gender then you come back until they can.  And if they are wrong then you get your money back (with birth certificate as proof lol).  I know that they could be wrong so we are waiting until our anatomy scan to confirm the gender before we go telling everyone.  We thought it would be fun to do and if that's what we want to spend our money on, then we will!  Have fun at your ultrasound!

I had an elective u/s at 18 weeks, which is when some people actually get their anatomy scans so I am hoping it was accurate. We find out this week at our 20 week scan if it was! I can say that the u/s pic from 18 weeks is very clear.

We had an elective u/s at 14 weeks, 3 days. We did not do this to find out sex. We did this because we had just told our children (ages 9&8) and wanted to let them see baby in a non-clinical setting because we feared it would be a little scary for them.  we lost our last pregnancy at 19 weeks. I might be projecting a little because every u/s still scares me after that.  But, at an elective, they are just doing it for fun.  so the tech, who is actually a tech at a local fertility clinic, made sure to show the kids all the good stuff and no scary technical stuff. Anyway, at that time, she said she was 300% sure it was a girl. I took this with a grain of salt because of how early it was. Well, I'm now almost 23 weeks and have had 3 additional u/s and each one has confirmed girl. So, I would say it was pretty accurate for us. This is what our u/s looked like at 14+ weeks (hope this works)-->
