Say what doc?!

I had my appt with my OB last week and she kind of freaked me out. First she said she may induce at 38 weeks if my baby measures large at my ultrasound on the 29th (so far I'm not measuring large at all, but I have GD so she's trying to play safe). The induction wouldn't be such an issue if I didn't live in New Orleans. And my 38 week point is the day before Mardi Gras. And my hospital wasn't two streets off of the main parade routes (poor planning on my part). Not that big of an issue and I'm not worried, just stressed a little since traffic will suck hard core.

But the other thing she said has me a little worried/wondering. She said I should be feeling the baby move about 6 times an hour. But I don't. I don't know if it's because I've gotten used to his movements, or (as I've read on lots of sites) because he's getting larger and has less room to move around, but I just don't feel him as much as I did before. Have any of you been feeling LO less? I mean, I'll feel him randomly throughout the day, but it won't be strong movements all the time. A lot of the time they seem muffled. Anyone have experience with movements like that? I mean, more often than not, the movement I feel feels like he's pushing out on any given side. But when I told the doc that she said it was probably BH.....

He doesn't have a lot of room so his movements will most likely be more subtle and less strong kicks and such.

I do not feel my baby 6 times an hour, I think that's a lot!  but when I do feel her, its like I'm getting my butt kicked from the inside.  I can make her move if I need to, but there are hours at time she doesn't move much and I figure she's just sleeping.  I wouldn't worry.  If its been a while, eat something sweet and lay on your side.  that should get baby moving.

See, that's what I thought. Which was why I was wondering. Thanks!

ditto I was not feeling my DS move that many times an hour towards the end either. He was LARGE and there wasn't as much room inside. You should still feel him, but I wouldn't worry if it's not that frequent.

I was told 10 kicks per hour for my kick counts.  I went from 10 kicks in 20 seconds 2 weeks ago to now he's about 10 kicks per 4 minutes.  DS1 did this as well.  Towards the last weeks of my pregnancy with DS1 it got to be about 10 kicks per half hour.  On the other hand, I grow huge, over active bruiser boys who have literally bruised me from the inside.  With the counts they basically say any movement counts as a "kick" because as they get bigger you don't get the same jabs as you did before.  They're also sleeping like 95% of the time or something crazy like that.  If he goes into what DH and I refer to as "stealth mode" and you don't feel him for awhile try the laying on the left side/drink some juice thing and see if you can get him moving.  We're in the home stretch ladies!  :)

I'm not a big fan of the early induction talk either.  With DD my doc actually put a c-section on the books at my 20 week appt because she was measuring big and was breech.  I thought it was a little much.  If it really bothers you ask to have another growth US closer to the induction date so you can reopen the conversation.

I also thought it was 10 kicks per hour, but I agree with PP that it doesn't happen every hour.

I agree re: induction. I want the baby in there until he's ready. It's just that since I have GD she is saying it's a potential. Granted, my GD is under control, but she still said that even if everything stays okay, she won't let me go past my due date....

Yeah that was close to the conversation I had too. They were talking c section because I had large fibroids and the OB was convinced the baby wouldn't be able to turn.   She did end up turning though, so I think it was worth it to have that last u/s.

Did your OB realize the timing when she said it? I'm sure that she wouldn't mind doing it a couple days later. As for movement, my DD could hit 10 kicks in less than 5 minutes around the clock (and she ended up being a horrible sleeper and colicky). This baby sleeps WAY more and there are plenty of hours when I don't feel it move at all.

I guess if you averaged DDs movements out over 24 hours it would average to about 6/hour. I'll go hours without her moving then she'll wiggle around, not really jabs and kicks anymore. And for me there's a difference between when she's pushing up against me and a BH.

umm, your doc  doesn't have you doign kick counts?? I have to do them and if he doesn't move at least 10 times in an hour I go to L&D....

most of my kick counts are less than 10 minutes, but my baby kinda has ADHD I think, lol

ETA: this is just one hour in the day that he is active, not every hour throughout the day.

my doc has never told me I HAD to do kick counts. I don't think they mentioned it at all last pregnancy or yet this pregnancy.

My doctor never even mentions kick counts. He asks if I'm feeling movement and that's it. My OB also doesn't measure fundal height or do ultrasounds aside from the A/S at 24 weeks. He also guessed the size of my LO within 2 oz.

I mean, more often than not, the movement I feel feels like he's pushing out on any given side. But when I told the doc that she said it was probably BH.....

I had this with my first two.....it was definately the baby pushing out against me.  With my second, I'd have a foot (I think) in the middle of my right side and when I'd apply counter pressure to it, he would move it and then shortly after I removed my hand boom I'd have that foot right back out there.

With this one, he's facing my spine and I've a feeling like he was pushing with all fours against my back pressing his back against my belly.

The feeling is definately different that BH -- no way could I mix up those two feelings.

I am 37 weeks and my Dr/Midwife and my nurse in baby class says that baby movements should be 6 movements in 2 hours (within a 24 hour period). So there should be a period during the day where you feel at least 6 movements in 2 hours. Then you stop worrying, and should feel baby again at least 6 movements in 2 hours. NOT every 2 hours.

I feel LO in the mornings for a few movements, afternoon, and then evening/night is most active. DR said that if you aren't noticing movements to go to a quiet space and lay down for a while and count movements. I also notice lots of movement when I drink really cold drinks or eat cold/frozen foods (I like to snack on frozen fruit).

I also have GD and am insulin controlled. My OB has a goal of 38 weeks to get me to. If not more. I am also doing NST 2's a week and ultra sounds biweekly. I wouldn't worry too much. If LO isn't measuring large now, chances are he/she will continue on that growth cycle. Your OB is probably just playing it safe and letting you know what possible outcomes there are.
