when did you have your IUD implanted?

If you have mirena or paragaurd, did your doctor make you wait to have a period before they would implant? Were you able to have it implanted at your six week post-op? Did they require you to have a consultation appointment first?

My six week appointment is Thursday and I am really hoping to have mirena implanted that same day but it seems like they insist I have a consultation only appointment first and I am wondering if it is because I won't have had my first post-partum period yet.

I had to have an appointment where they took blood to test for STDs and they also had to get pre-approval from my health insurance.  A week later, I was able to have the IUD inserted. It was about 7 weeks after I had the baby.  I didn't have to wait for a period, that wasn't a factor.   If you want the IUD, call ahead and let them know and ask what you need to do in advance.  I wanted it on the same day as my 6 week pp check-up and they couldn't do it due to the blood work and pre-approval needed.

They can't insert it the same day, as it needs to be ordered and you need to have your consultation first. I also had to get a blood pregnancy test done. My OB prescribed Mirena at my 6 week PP visit, and it was then inserted 4 weeks later.

If its covered under medical insurance, it can be done same day. It only has to be ordered if its covered under pharmaceutical. However, it may take some time for them to figure out which one its covered under, and then it wouldn't be same day. So...yeah. Definitely call ahead.

FWIW, my OB recommended I wait until I'm actually on my period to get it because its supposed to hurt less.

I called 2 weeks before my 6 week pp visit and was told that They keep ParaGard on hand but Mirena has to be orders through the company who also checks with your insurance. I didn't need a consultation visit and luckily since they suggested ParaGard, it was inserted at my already scheduled appt.

Mine won't do it earlier than 8 weeks. Normally, you need to have a period but since I'm BFing it's not a factor. She said the earlier it's put in after a vaginal delivery the easier it is to insert and there is likely less cramping since your cervix is still on the softer side.
