What are the rules for a sprinkle party

Long story shory this is my 3rd but DH 1st and my youngest is 12yrs old so I have no baby stuff laying around I dont even have toys in the house any more....I know I know not an excuse its no one elses fault my life turned a page this way AND yes we are perfectly able to buy our own things (I have been already ;)) and some people have been offering their baby items they no longer need.

Anyway this is my first hearing of a sprinkle party.....what is a sprinkle party and what are the rules??

who throws a sprinkle party?

who is invited to a sprinkle party?

do you have a registry or is that open ended?

can you just have appitizers or just desserts or does a full meal have to be offered at a sprinkle party?

thank you for your help....I was also thinking of a meet the baby party which do you think is better?

Anyway this is my first hearing of a sprinkle party.....what is a sprinkle party and what are the rules?? Basically, it's a really small shower.  It's a newer concept, I believe.

who throws a sprinkle party? A member of your immediate family or a VERY close friend

who is invited to a sprinkle party? see above Also, read: keep it small.

do you have a registry or is that open ended? no registry

can you just have appitizers or just desserts or does a full meal have to be offered at a sprinkle party? If you are doing it at a "meal time" I would serve a meal.  Otherwise I think apps and deserts are fine

thank you for your help....I was also thinking of a meet the baby party which do you think is better? In your situation, I would honestly say a meet the baby party is better.  I think people that want to bring you gifts will and who doesn't love to meet a new baby.

Good luck!

The previous poster covered your questions - for a quick reference, my mom had a suprise sprinkle for me with my second.  But it was just immediate family, and some close aunts, all getting together to celebrate a baby girl.  Most people just brought small outfits, or handmade pink blankets, etc as a token of welcoming the baby.  It in no way resembled a shower.  Just my experience.

I've been to quite a few sprinkles recently and this is how they all were. Just very small, informal get togethers.

I will say though, that you shouldn't throw it yourself. If no one has offered to throw it for you, do a meet the baby party.

Agreed!

I'll jump on this band wagon.  I would also say that because a sprinkle is kept to a minimum of guests you may want to do a "meet the baby" party instead.  I had a friend offer to host a sprinkle for my 3rd baby but we have too many friends and family so we hosted a "meet the baby" BBQ instead.  It has been my experience that the gifts given at a sprinkle are about the same given at a meet the baby party (diapers, wipes and clothes).  Definitely take what anyone offers...as far as hand-me-downs.

I'd prefer attending a meet the baby party rather than a sprinkle.  I'd bring a gift to either event but I don't really like sprinkles (except on ice cream - I'm Pro-Sprinkle on ice cream, except in Rhode Island, we call them "jimmies").

If someone really wants to through you a sprinkle party, it really is like a downsized shower. Most I've seen are when someone has had like 2-3 boys and is now having a girl, she needs girlie clothes of course. Something I really liked that I went to was a Mommy Shower concept. Instead of buying baby things all the ladies chipped in for her mani/pedi spa treatments and they did a pampering day for her. It was her second pregnancy but she was having twins. It was also a cool idea that is probably fairly new.

My only caution about a meet the baby party is that everyone wants to hold the baby and that is not necessarily in the best interest of the baby to be passed around for 2-3 hours. Also, as much as people think they are doing the right thing by leaving their sick family member at home, when one person in a family is sick, the others are often carrying it. Gatherings with a baby that is not vaccinated for things like whooping cough (8wks) can be risky.
