PSA - NT Scan

For those of you who plan to get it, be sure to check your insurance coverage for it before your get them as these are very expensive.

I made an appointment for it. Called my insurance company last week the agent said its covered. Called again today to verify another agent said its considered experimental so it is  not covered.

Needless to say I will be cancelling my appointment.

I just got my BFP today with #3 and have not posted an intro yet, but was lurking and wanted to comment on this.  If you can call the office where you will be having this done and ask them if they will provide you with the actual procedure codes they will bill, you can call your insurance with this information and they should be able to pull up the actual codes and let you know if it is covered, at what rate and will you require pre-authorization.

I have had a NT done with each of my pregnancies after having a friend opt to not have one and suffer a tragic situation.  It's noninvasive, since its just taking in some of your personal factors and then taking measurements via ultra/sound of the baby. For us, it was not done to determine if we would terminate if there were concerns, it was more about being prepared.

I think I would call your insurance back and ask what is "experimental" about this screening?

It's not experimental, but it IS optional, so some insurance companies refuse to cover it. I called last time and I only wound up paying a $50 copay and nothing else. Most insurance companies should cover it at this point, but better safe than sorry.

More insurance companies are covering NT scans now. Ours covered 100% of the NT scan with DS. I would call again and triple-check before canceling your appointment.

Weird... before insurance, mine was MAYBE $200 all told (that included the ultrasound and the blood work)
