alternative to epidural:Nubain

I was talking to another teacher today and she told me about a drug called Nubain. It helps to take the "edge" off of labor, but is different from an epidural. Has anyone ever tried it?

I had it during labor it was awful, it didn't help the pain, just made me feel dopey, I don't remember much from giving birth including holding my daughter for the first time.
It's a narcotic similar to morphine. I also strongly believe it's what caused my daughter to be so lethargic after birth causing low blood sugar and latch issues.

With all my deliveries I had IV drugs but mine was a mixture of 3.

My OB told me that most people who go the narcotic route for pain relief during labor usually end up with an epidural in the end.  This will be my 4th baby and I can't imagine a narcotic ever taking the edge off enough for me to deliver without an epidural.

I hated it.  It did nothing for the pain.  It just made me so dopey that, when my folks came in to see me, I couldn't even interact with them.  I was still in pain, just too drugged to care.  Luckily for me it was worn off by the time DS was delivered, but ultimately, the nubain was the worst part of my deliver (other than the fact that my delivery was not at all what I had wanted).  This time I have an absolute NO to nubain on my file.  I would rather know that I was in pain, but still recognize my family.

I tried the narcotics with DS1 and honestly it just made me feel drunk and loopy and not at all in control of myself.  After a couple of doses I gave it up and got my epidural at 7 cm.  The epidural was much, much better because I was coherent and aware of what was going on.  I also didn't think it did much for the pain.

Thanks! All of the information is very helpful! It doesn't sound as good as it did earlier today.

I didn't think narcotics were usually recommended close to delivery so unless you have a long labor, they might not be the best option. I've heard if they are given too close to the actual delivery, they can pass on to the baby.

With that said, I had an 18 hour labor and did receive staydol early on. I was literally passed out asleep within one minute. I personally loved it just because I was SO exhausted and couldn't sleep. A lot of people hate that feeling but I didn't mind it. I wouldn't do it if I was having a quick labor though.

drpayne:
I've never heard anything good about it.

Me either, and this post is no different.

I'd rather just skip right to an epidural for pain management, if that's the route I wanted to take anyway.

They gave me something in an IV and I felt DRUNK. Like, the world was spinning. Hated it. All it did was make me want the epidural and wish I had skipped straight to that. The epidural, however, was AWESOME!

Nubain is a narcotic. Yes, it can take the edge off of labor, but if it is given too close to birth it can make your baby drowsy and depress respirations. The worst part of labor pain-wise is typically transition, which is closer to the active phase (where baby gets pushed out). I think they would have to give Nubain earlier than this to keep the baby safe. Getting it earlier before the pain really kicks in seems like a waste to me.

For me, it seems like the epidural would be safer for baby than a narcotic and work a lot better. I have looked into a lot of different pain management strategies and have decided that if I need some pharmacological interventions, it will be an epidural.

They normally give it to you to take the edge off when you aren't yet ready for the epi.  I have never heard of it in place of the epidural, but more for relaxation during labor.

When I had it for my 2nd, it felt great and really does work for that purpose only.  The only thing I can compare it to....if you ever saw Look Who's Talking?....in the beginning where she gets drugs, and the baby's hand crosses his face and he sees like a trail of fingers...that's what it's like - you're loopy!

If you haven't ever seen the movie, that was totally lost on you, but hope that helped.

It made me loopy and fuzzy and knocked me out for the night... relaxed me to the point that my contractions stopped and I was discharged the next morning because I wasn't progressing.  Bad stuff, not going there again.

My experience was like a lot of these ladies'. It didn't help with the pain at all, but it made my body and mind so loopy that I wasn't able to complain about it. So while it probably appeared to other people like I was in less pain, it was actually the same amount of pain but with no way to express it. Avoid it!
