Soothers

When did you introduce a soother to your LO?

Irelyn was given one at the NICU right from birth. Though she never really took to it (at least not when I gave it to her). At home we tried a different type of soother and she takes that a couple times a day maybe.
I have read you should wait until 1 month, but sometimes she just needs to suck. Like I said some days I don't give it to her at all. Sometimes she takes it once or twice at night for about 5-10 minutes and same through the day a couple times.

We gave DD hers right away. She's just a sucker, especially after she eats she just wants to suck on something and if it's not the pacifier it's her fingers and I would much rather her get used to the pacifier that I can throw away some day than trying to figure out how to get her to stop sucking her thumb/fingers. She hasn't had any nipple confusion or anything either, so far it's working great for us!

Most pediatricians disagree on the "wait one month" thing. My LC told me that it was the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendation that breastfed babies not be given a pacifier for one month to avoid nipple confusion (she said it in a way that expressed that was the professional opinion but not necessarily one she agreed with). My pediatrician said pacifiers don't cause nipple confusion because the baby doesn't get anything of nutritive value from the pacifier, so they don't associate it with food.

I think if she needs to suck and will take a pacifier, it's probably not going to do any damage to give one to her. This is, however, a personal opinion, and the decision you make will be based on what you think is best for you and LO. If in doubt, do some more research before making a decision. :)

I tried to wait a month, but around three weeks my LO was asking to nurse every 20 minutes then promptly falling asleep.  Now I'm trying to set some rules to avoid becoming dependent on it (me and baby).  Only at night, when he's been fed recently, that sort of thing.  I never thought I would be stressing out over this!

We waited a full two weeks because I wanted to really establish breastfeeding, but really, she didn't seem to want it before then. It wasn't until she found her thumbs that I broke it out. I, too, thought it'd be easier to break her of a paci sucking habit rather than a thumb sucking habit.

I asked my pedi about the nipple confusion thing and she said it wasn't a problem. FWIW I'm a nurse in the hospital and we use soothers on babies super early all the time and if nothing else is going on, they always seem happy and eager to go back to the boob :)

With my two older kids, I waited until they were at least a month old because I was told that was best. With this baby, she wanted to suck on anything (skin, fingers, clothing) starting at just days old. I spoke with a lactation consultant who said that it's fine to introduce one right away as long as you continue to feed them often. She said there have actually been evidence that it can help teach them to suck rather than interfere with nursing as previously thought. With that said, I've been giving this baby a pacifier since just 3 or 4 days old, and she's an excellent nurser.

My LO was sucking on everything since day one, even leaving hickeys on my shoulders. We gave her one on day 3 and she has been using it ever since and still breast feeding fine. No nipple confusion and her latch is still good.

Go ahead and give it. Pacifiers don't cause nipple confusion. Bottles do. The bottle drips in their mouth or with very little suckling they are able to get milk from a bottle. The breast is harder to get milk from and they have to work harder. Hence a baby preferring a bottle over mom. Thus nipple confusion. My LO had a paci on day one in the hospital. She is 5mo and nursing fine. Haven't had any issues at all.
