really bad advice

so my cousin is pregnant with her first and posted something on fbook about being 4cm dilated at 34.5 weeks although she wasn't having any contractions... any who, one of her gfs (who has a 1 year old) comes on and posts:

"you should have them break your water and induce you bc you can't get the epi once you reach 7cm"

I was like holy s*** that's crazy!!!! so when I pointed out that she wasn't even full term and the baby would most likely have to go to the NICU the same friend came back and said that just because the baby would be small doesn't mean anything would be wrong with having a baby that early...

has anyone else seen really awful advice like this???  I wanted to smack her for worrying about getting pain meds vs the baby's safety :/

As a preemie mom, dumbshits like this piss me off.  And it makes me even more angry that they can reproduce.

Facebook should be closed for advice... I swear it makes the stupid come out of people!
Luckily no doctor would break someone's water that early unless it was totally necessary.

This. I was induced at 36 weeks and while the problems we faced where very minor, it still pisses me off.

lol if makes you feel better I told her off along with another guy who said that it was okay for babies to be born early because hospitals are prepared for younger babies now... her boyfriend then proceeded to delete me from their page since they have a joint facebook...

Good for you!!  I'd feel good about saying something.

Signs you shouldn't be a parent:  you want your baby to be born early for no reason.

I hate stuff like this on Facebook! It drives me nuts more than anything. There was a mom on my Facebook who went into preterm labor and they were luckily able to stop it. Then from about 36 weeks on she talked about how she was trying all of the natural induction methods she could and I wanted to punch her in the face. I don't understand how you could be faced with that scare and then not appreciate the time you have.

I agree that was horrible advice.  But it seems weird to me that someone would post on facebook how dilated they were in the first place.

I side eye anyone with a joint Facebook to begin with.

But holyfuckingsshit. It blows my mind how ignorant people can be. Sigh.

Not only is that advice ridiculous and stupid, it is also inaccurate.

my cousin is young (19 I think) although that is no excuse...  however she is very ignorant... she told me she couldn't figure out how they came up with 40 weeks when  you are supposed to be pregnant for 9 months

I read that in that she questioned that 40 weeks is actually more than 9 months, but I'm sure, given how ignorant she sounds, that she was wondering why they speak in terms of weeks and not months.

My BFF was delivered by c-section at 34 weeks 6 days and her baby was only 4 lbs 6 oz had to spend over two weeks in the hospital learning how to breathe and eat properly.  Just because you are thisclose to your due date doesn't mean that everything would be fine if you delivered.

people are so effing stupid it makes me sick. i apparently make very large babies (DD was over 9lbs and was 2 weeks early) and people will say things to me all the time about how i'm going to have this one early, like more than a month early. (Due at the very end of March and they will say - oh, you'll be lucky to make it to february! WTF). ummm, no. i'm not going to have my baby early if i can do anything about it. just because my baby might be big at 35/36 weeks, doesn't mean he should come out!!! so annoying.

I've seen/heard way too much of that recently. 37 weeks is term, and 40 weeks is full term, and before that, babies should stay put!

I feel like pregnancy is becoming a race these days. It peeves me to no end.

wow, the worst advice I ever got was to let my 6 week old cry for a bit because it's "good for their lungs"

Amen to that.

My husband got flamed by his extended family during the holidays because he hasn't kept up a steady stream of updates about my internal organs "to keep everyone in the loop."  Silly boy thought it would be more rewarding to stay married than to give people I've not ever met fodder to gossip about my uterus.

That's just awful. It really amazes me how many DUMB people are out there and it scares me that they reproduce. Good for you for correcting them!

People say this to me all the time because I have really blown up in the last couple of weeks, and those that know that the OBs have been telling me about the "big baby prediction," FI's family will say things like that all the time. They have been since around early December, which was wellllll before I would even be considered full term. I started to get really upset, and said, "Why would you even suggest that my baby would be premature?"

They're all, "Oh, you won't make it to your 36 week appt!" Um.... I will if I can effing help it. Just because a baby is predicted to be big (or even is bigger) doesn't mean that they're ready to be in the world just yet. People are stupid, ignorant and don't think before they speak.

I've always been in the same boat. DD was a day late at 8lbs 14oz, DS was 10 days early at 9lbs 15oz... this time around people kept telling me I wasn't going to make it to Christmas... umm ya, all set with that thanks!

My DS1 was 5 weeks premature and I'm currently dealing with the possibility of a second premature baby and it baffles me that people don't take this seriously.  I want desperately this time around to have a baby and take them home quickly rather than weeks, tubes, feeding issues, and eating issues later and will do whatever it takes. I pray for that child's health and safety.

That's incredibly dumb. I was born 5 weeks prematurely and even though I was pretty healthy I STILL had to spend 2 weeks in the NICU.

I actually think this one is true. Crying is good for lung expansion, but it certainly doesn't mean you should leave a baby crying to give its lungs a workout. Haha.
