At the end of my rope with this diaper rash

Have you had experience with bad diaper rash? LO has had this diaper rash since we brought her home from the hospital. Just as it starts to get better it gets REALLY bad again. I have tried airing it out, no wipes, sensitivity diapers, switching brands (pampers to huggies), desitin, butt paste, tripe paste, aveeno, cornstarch, this cream they gave her in the NICU. The only thing that seemed so semi work was using aquaphor. I was using that and it was getting better. Then the pediatrician prescribed her an anti-fungal cream (Lotrisone) on friday ao I started using it Saturday. But since using it, her rash has gotten 10x worse not better. I feel soooo helpless!!

As of today, I stopped using the anti-fungal cream and I let her butt breath for an hour last night and and hour this morning. I am only using aquaphor. No wipes (havent all weekend), rinsing her butt off under the faucet (she screams). Her poor little butt is bleeding a little bit too Crying

Did the pedi say what kind of rash it is? Is it yeast?

For us w/ a yeast rash the nystatin helped, but so did the OTC lotramin. Lots of air time, baking soda in the bath. We would do a layer of the lotramin, then a thick layer of a desitin type cream to act as a barrier.

No disposable wipes. Just a wet washcloth when needed - definitely not at every change.

My other suggestion is to try more than just 2 kinds of diapers. There are plenty of other brands as well as cloth. We exclusively use cloth and the first diaper rash DD got was at age 1. Some babies have severe sensitivities to the disposable ones.

One of the babies I used to care for had a horrible case of what was initially thought to be diaper rash. After trying a bunch of different creams, including prescription, the doctor figured out it was a yeast infection, prescribed cream for that, and it cleared up within a week.

I tried EVERY type of cream with my DS. It turns out that he is allergic to something in all of the white creams. We use A&D ointment, and breastmilk. When he got a rash, we would put pumped bm on his rash and let it air dry, then put A&D on before we diaper him back up. Because of his sensitivity, we use A&D at every diaper, even if there is no rash.

He was also treated (multiple times) for yeast infection, those treatments also made him worse.

My LO's rash wasn't as bad as some here, but we changed to a larger sized diaper.  that and the lotion cleared it up.

My LO had an annoying (to me) red rash..mostly tiny red bumps that were persistant. I tried diaper rash cream, yeast cream, airing it out...eventually I changed diaper brands (huggies snug n dry to pampers swaddlers). I think the blue lining was causing it because it cleared up right away. Poor thing, can you see your doc again??

If your LO doesnt have a yeast infection, try this. My daughter had a horrible rash and this cleared it up in a day or two. After every change lotrimin, butt paste, then vaseline. Hers was super red and I was amazed how quick it helped. Good luck!!

A&D for sure! Or go back to aquaphore. That's what worked for us. It was really bad too andraw and it was the only thing that cleared it up!

This stuff is AMAZING. They even have some with an antifungal. We used this when DS had diaper rash soon after coming home from the hospital. Now we only use cloth wipes and use Grovia Magic Stick at every diaper change and haven't had a problem since. We use Pamper's Swaddlers.

Thanks everyone for the comments! Called the pedi again today and told him what happened when we used the anti-fungal. So he wants to try Silvadene which is for burns. It makes me so nervous to put something else new on her butt.. I'm afraid it will make it even more worse. He said she should not have a reaction to it because anything used on burns has to be a good product. Pedi said she may be allergic to the zinc oxide that is in all of the creams.

I ordered some Seventh Generation diapers off Amazon today too. I'm going to try those.. they are chlorine free. I was using the Huggies Pure and Natural but come to find out, are not chlorine free.

Using cotton balls/pads soaked in baby oil as wipes instead of wipes may also help. We just discovered this http://www.amazon.com/Remedy-Calazime-Protectant-Paste-MSC094544H/dp/B001D0NARQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1357694577&sr=8-5&keywords=medline+remedy+with+olivamine and it was AMAZING for LO's diaper rash.

It also smells like orange sherbet, which is a plus. It does have zinc oxide, though, so if your LO has an allergy to that, it obviously won't work out.

Paul only gets diaper rash when I eat soy. Since I've stopped eating it he hasn't had it at all.

I know that you said you tried to switch diapers but I might suggest trying again if you haven't tried Pampers Swaddlers yet. We had really bad diaper rash (including the raw/bleeding you mention) and switching to swaddlers was an immediate fix for us. We figured it was because of the "mesh" liner in the diapers. Worth a shot, maybe?

How's her poop?  LO had a milk allergy, and it made her poops highly acidic which gave her a terrible rash.  She had a rash that didn't respond to the creams I tried, so I used coconut oil and let her have tons of naked time during the day.  The next day there was a huge improvement so maybe try that if nothing else works.  Coconut oil is naturally anti-fungal too.

After baby's first week, we switched to cloth diapers, then added cloth wipes using only water, and coconut oil on her bottom. No diaper rash since.
