no AF yet, BFing

Hi, DS just turned a year and still no AF. I really want to TTC 2 especially bc I'm getting up there in age but am conflicted bc I don't want to stop nursing. Should I make an appt with my OB or will he just tell me to stop nursing if I want to TTC?

I'm sure they will tell you to stop nursing first.  How often are you nursing now?  I just got my first PP period at 10.5 months.  I am nursing twice a day and pumping once.  I am not sure how regular my periods will be though and I am planning to stop pumping in two weeks.  Then, I will stop the morning nursing.  Is there a nursing session you could replace with cow's milk, since your DS is a year now?

What PP said.

You might not have to wean in order to begin ovulating again. I suggest trying to lengthen the amount of time between feedings, so if you were to follow PP's suggestion, for example, instead of nursing LO midday, you could nurse in the morning, offer a sippy or bottle of cows milk midday, and nurse in the evening and at the other usual times. It could be that in a few weeks, after creating a long nurseless stretch in your day, you ovulate and get a period.

I am still nursing my 14 month old on demand and haven't had a period yet. He nurses in the morning, before and after his 2 naps, after dinner, at bedtime, once or twice during the night, and at random times if he gets scared or bumps his head or whatever. This kid loves the boob, and I plan to let him selfwean. My fingers are crossed that my fertility returns this spring, because I would love to start TTC soon. We'll see. Best of luck!

BFing and fertility can really vary by person. Some woman have to wean completely, others do not. Since you haven't had a pp period, I would probably reduce the number of sessions that you nurse. Are you still nursing during the night? Night weaning can also help.

Below are some links with good information on the topic. According to the first link, the 14 months pp is the average for a woman who BFs on demand to get her period, but there is a lot of variation.

I agree with PPs. My son is almost 10 months and I haven't gotten my period back yet. It makes TTC difficult and a little confusing. I am planning to stop pumping for work at one year so I am hoping my period returns then. GL!

Hi, thanks so much for all the advice! I nurse on demand on the weekend and during the work week I nurse at 5am, 7:30am, pump at 10:30 and 1:30, nurse at 3:30, 6:30 and then a few times during the night but those are all really quick comfort sucks to get him to go back to sleep. If he stopped comfort nursing would that make a difference? It's usually five minutes here and there anywhere from three times a night to seven I know that's a big range. I have to pump and can't give that up bc he is allergic to dairy and soy so he can't have cow milk or soy milk. Almond milk and rice milk aren't fatty enough and DS is in the fourth percentile so he really needs fat.

Are you sure it's only comfort nursing in the night? C never nurses for more than 5ish minutes at a time now. I personally would really make an effort to completely night wean. I know it's hard though, we are still not there but I got AF back at 8.5 months PP.

I got my first PP period when LO was 14 months, and only after he had been night weaned for 2 or 3 weeks.

Honestly any doc will tell you to wean if you want to get your cycle back.  Many people will tell you that if you make a drastic change e.g. night weaning or not nursing for a long block of time, that you can trick your body into stating back again.  My n=1, I worked from 6wks on and didn't get a period until DD1 was 16mo and now DD2 is 13.5mo and again no cycle. I feel your conflict however, I wasn't willing to wean DD1 to TTC and now feel guilty about the thought of cutting back faster with DD2.  GL.

oh, and there is a TTC while BFing check in above, it's usually on tuesdays.

I think it's just comfort nursing bc he does that light fluttering kind of sucking instead of the gulping kind. I would like to night wean him but if I don't nurse him he cries and cries and will stay awake for hours :
