Miscarriage and New Pregnancy

I was pregnant the same time last year except I never made it past the first trimester.  I had what is called a Missed Miscarriage.  The baby actually died at 9 weeks and I didn't found out until 12 weeks at an ultrasound.

This time I am already 8 weeks pregnant and I am so scared I am going to miscarry again.  I have my first appointment with the doctor next week.  I really want to ask for an ultra sound for proof of life.  My husband thinks that I shouldn't ask at all.  He says we should wait for the next ultrasound to find out.  He tells me everyday to not to worry and remain calm, but my fears sometimes get the best of me.

Is there anything that I can do or ask the doctor that could help me feel better?

With you having had a previous miscarriage I would think they would do an u/s on your first appt. If not I would ask the doctor to do one!

I'm so sorry for your loss.

My doctor's office usually does a dating transvaginal ultrasound to see how far along you are. They usually let you listen to the heartbeat. Do you know if your office does an early dating ultrasound? Can you ask them? Are you sure of when you ovulated (charting?) because they may want to see how far along you are and that requires ultrasound measurements.

Also, with your history of loss they may do one just to check. The only thing you can do is call and ask. If anything they will take note of your call in the office and when you get there they might see.

The only thing you can do right now is remember today, to the best of your knowledge, you are pregnant and love your baby right now. I would go ahead and ask the doctor. The worst they can say is no, right?

I'm so sorry about your loss.  I would definitely ask your doctor to do an ultrasound and measure the heart rate if it will help you feel better.  I think it's common at many practices to do an ultrasound at 8 weeks to confirm age and heartbeat.  Especially with your history, I would think your doctor would want to do one anyway, but I wouldn't hesitate to ask if they don't suggest it.

I would ask as it can help calm your fears. Just remember this is a new year and a new pregnancy.

I had an ultra sound at 6 wks and 4 days to confirm how far along I was.  The baby was alive and ok, but that's exactly what happened last time.  Is it still ok to ask for another or should I wait the few more weeks???

Are you doing an NT scan? If you feel like it would ease your mind then I would ask. I don't know how insurance would do for it though. It might be OOP. You'd have to ask about that because it could be considered elective. Ask your doctor for details!

It stands for nuchal translucency....it can be an early marker for Down's.  As PP mentioned, some insurances might view anything besides a dating US, the NT, and the 18 week anatomy scan as "optional", so you might want to be sure it's covered, but if you're considered high risk, they may be able to justify it.  It can't hurt to ask!

Will a doppler pick up the heartbeat by 8 weeks?  And I agree with PP about asking the Dr to do an u/s.  It never hurts to ask!  :)  Praying for you!

I have had two previous miscarriages and am really nervous about going through another one.

We had a dating scan at 6w3d and saw baby with a strong heartbeat and we have our first midwife appointment tomorrow at which I intend to ask for another scan to settle my mind.

I have no issues with requesting another scan, to settle my mind and feel confident about this pregnancy.

WOW!! This is EXACTLY what happened to me last year! I would ask for an ultrasound. I would surprised if they didn't do one considering your history. I go for my 8 week check next Wednesday and I am scared!! I had to go last week due to bleeding and cramping but the baby was fine! Flicker for the heartbeat and all. I again saw this last pregnancy and still miscarried. I know exactly what your going through dear. Think positive!!!

GOOD NEWS Ladies!  Everything is well.  The new doctor in our office opted to do an ultrasound instead of the heart monitor.  She said my uterus was pointing down and away so no matter how much we searched on the doppler we wouldn't of even had heard it.  SO she did the ultrasound and everything looks great.  She really wanted to help ease my mind and nerves seeing how I had elevated blood pressure.  Thank you all of you for the support!
