Georgiana

How do you pronounce this name? I thought there was only one way, but I watched the movie The Duchess recently and they were pronouncing it Geor-Jane-ah. Does anyone else use this pronunciation or is this some antiquated British pronunciation that I needn't worry about?

I have both George and Georgiana on my list to honor a family member.

Weird. I've heard of Georgina, but I've never heard of Georgiana pronounced that way.

I would never look at that and think "Geor-Jane-ah". Geor-Gee-Ah-Na all the way Big Smile And, I really like it! Also love Georgia.

It's definitely a legit name.

I have a distaste for it because it's my first name and my maiden name squished together and teachers used to call me Georgiana but mistake,

I say "Jor-G (the letter)-onna"

Geor Jane Ah is used in the UK today. I've never met one on this side of the ocean but that's how I say it in my head when I read Pride and Prejudice.

Captain Google tells me that The Duchess came from an area known for eccentric pronunciations.  They also said "cucumber," "yellow" and "you" oddly.

Most of what I'm reading has people also scratching their heads so I don't think this is something to worry about.

I'd say george-gee-anna or geor-janna.

Really? Because I fell in love with the name when I read P&P, but non of the film versions I've seen use the Geor Jane ah pronunciation.  Hmmm....

It's not quite Geor Jane Ah, I don't know how to spell it phonetically, but it wasn't Geor-gee-ah-nah. More like 3 syllables instead of 4. That's how I heard it said over there.

More like Jor Jah nah? I'm fine with that pronunciation, it was the extreme Jane sound that threw me.

Maybe like Jor Jay Nah? Kind of slurred between syllables 2 and 3. Jor-jonna, sort of? Now I have said this name out loud so many times it sounds like nonsense and it sounds strange no matter which pronunciation I use.

Yeah, I read the book The Dutchess and that's how she pronounced her name. There's a whole section on the pronounciation. I think it started with her mother calling her that. I actually like it pronounced with the "Jane - Ah" but then again I'm a bit of a fan of the slightly aristo, some might say pretentious, British names.

It's a fairly common upper crust Brit name. I am surprised there is no princess by this name, although Diana did have an ancestor by the name.

George-ee-anna

I would probably say George-ee-ahna.

A note about The Duchess movie...I read the book and the biographer comments that the Cavendish family had a different accent and pronounced Georgiana differently than the Spencers. I bet the movie was trying to be historically accurate.
