STM's- carseat question

So I asked DH last night when he thinks I should get the baby's car seat added in and move DS1 from the center over to the side.... I got crickets.  I don't want to do it so early that it's silly but I also don't want to back burner it and wait to the last minute.

So moms when are you shifting your kid and adding in the car seat base for the baby?

I was JUST thinking the same thing last night. The infant car seat and the two bases are just sitting by the front door. It seems silly for them to be just sitting there when we can actually be working out what works best for my car, and FI's car.

Tentatively, I am thinking this week I am going to adjust the carseats and figure out what works best. I'll probably look a little ridiculous riding around with an infant car seat but, meh, whatever.

I'm 38 weeks (tomorrow), and we haven't done it yet.  DH is quick at installing carseats anymore, so I'm not too worried about it.  He can always do it when it's time to take the baby home.  We have to take DS's seat out this weekend for unrelated reasons, so maybe we'll do it then.  I talked to DS about it a few times.  I still sit in back with him if we are all in the car, so it will be a bit of a change when that isn't possible anymore.

DD is already on the passenger side of our cars so we don't have to do much movement. But DH plans to install the bucket and base while I'm in the hospital. Its pretty easy to do.

Maybe at least move your toddler over now to get used to sitting on the side?

We did it early 20ish weeks in both our cars so we wouldn't have to do it in the cold winter weather... Then we got in a car accident and wrote off DHs car so I am due to have a csection on Thursday and I have to go pick up the replacement base today since it just came in at the store.

We only use convertibles and we still need to buy another for the baby. We will either have it in the car for my husband to install before we leave the hospital or we will actually put it in around my due date. I'm not too worried.

We just did that this past weekend.  We moved DD1 from passenger side to sit behind the driver seat in my vehicle and then installed the infant seat base.  We rearranged everything in DH's truck too.

I'm thinking sometime in the last few weeks, we're pretty good at installing it now so I don't feel like its all that urgent. I do want to get the cover washed and the plastic parts wiped down since its been in the basement. I'm thinking I'll go on a cleaning binge in the beginning of my last month when I unpack all the baby stuff, and once it's clean and upstairs I will probably install it just so it's not taking up space in my house!

I installed the baby's seat a few weeks ago just to make sure everything fit and everyone got used to 3 across. DD has always sat behind the drivers seat, DS has always sat behind the passenger seat. We moved DS to the center because his car seat was a better fit than DD's (although I'm nervous having him sit so close to baby), and the baby is going to be behind the passenger seat. I'm not going to attempt putting the infant carrier in the center while DD or DS wait outside the car out of eye shot, and I'm not attempting to sit them down and get a carrier over one of them. Do what works for you and makes you comfortable. Your DH sounds like my DH... crickets! haha, he just doesn't know/care enough and figures I know better anyway so it's my decision.

H just went out last night to practice installing the base and check for spacing.  He didn't leave them in the car, and will install the base in time to take LO home from the hospital.  Since I'm having a c-section and he knows how to install we're not worried about having it done ahead of time.

Also, since my mom will be watching my son we'll have to take his car seat out to put in her car so there is no point in moving him ahead of time.

We have been putting it off.... DD is going to be 2 1/2 soon, but I am so nervous about turning her from RF to FF (she is on the low end weight wise), which we have to do for her seat to fit  Especially with the snow and ice that we have around here.  She is also very particular, so I want her to get used to her new spot in the car.  It is supposed to hit 60 here in the next few days, and I expect all of the snow will melt, so we will probably do it then.

We are going to play around with the seat and finalize where it's going this weekend (well, DH is, I'm on bedrest) then pull it out until I'm in the hospital. Once the baby seat is in DD1 and her friend who we carpool to school with will be banished to the third row, so I'm not leaving it in until I have to! Luckily we have done so many carseat installs at this point due to moving seats to put adults in the middle row and to sending the kids with various family members that we can do it in under 5 minutes. The only reason we're playing around before he arrives is that it's a new infant seat and the install is a little different so DH doesn't want his first time doing it when I can't check it (I've been planning to take the course to be a CPST and am picky; he always gets it right but always makes me confirm) plus we want to see whether DS or DD2 will be in the middle seat, which depends on which allows the passenger seat to move out of the way to allow access to the third row easiest.

DD went from the middle of my old car to the side of the new one (captains seats) over a year ago; that took a little getting used to for her not being able to see out the center. DH is tall and the infant seat won't fit behind the driver seat when he drives my car (which he does on the weekends), so we knew we would have to switch DD from behind the passenger to behind the driver. I did that a while back so that she didn't feel like she was being moved because of the baby. As for when we will install the other seat- who knows. I was just thinking that this weekend. With DD I installed it at like, 34 weeks (whenever the books say to) but I'm not fretting. I may put it behind the third row seat so that I still have room for passengers but it's in the car if we need it, or I may just wait until 38ish weeks and if we need it sooner DH can always drive home and get it.

What car do you have? You should be able to get both in RF if you install your older child more upright (which is perfectly safe; they only need the 45* angle as a newborn). Not that you have to keep a 2.5 year old RF, but if you wanted to you probably could. For a while we had two RF radians in our beetle and DH is over 6' tall!

Around 37 wks I'll install the base. The carseat itself won't go in until we are on the way to the hospital. DD is already on the passenger side, she will stay there.

DH will do it at some point while I am in the hospital.  If you know what you are doing, which everyone should, it shouldn't take long to get it installed.  Also, you don't really want to be driving around with it because if you get in an accident you'll have to replace the seat.

I got my infant seat cleaned and ready, but haven't installed it yet. My SUV only has the latch system on the sides, the middle seat is tiny, so I'm leaving DS where he is. I'm planning on putting the infant seat in soon so that DS will have some time to get use to the idea of Baby Sister riding in the car with him.

My DH installed the bases today. I'd rather be safe than scrambling to get them in when I go into labor.

I'm honestly not sweating that right now because it takes so little time to actually install the base. My husband could do it before we leave for the hospital or even after she is born. He will be going back and forth to our house anyway, so it isn't a big deal. I should wash the car seat, though. There's something else for my list...

We will do it when we are closer. It really doesn't take more then two minutes for the infant car seat. We haven't decided if we are going to use the infant carrier or the big car seat rf yet so I imagine sometime next month we will figure all that out. : I do need to clean the infant car seat cover though.

We live 10 minutes from the hospital, so I think what will happen is that my husband will go home to walk the dogs at some point after the baby is born, and install the carseat then.  Now that we know how to do it, it doesn't take much time at all (our car has the latch, too).
