water smelly??

I was wondering if any of you new or veteran moms can answer a question for me.

When your water breaks, does it smell really bad? and if so, how can you clean it?

Reason being, if I end up having my water break while im sleeping, driving in my car, or vacuuming the carpet in the nursery, I wanted to know if it really smells (which wouldn't surprise me) and how can I clean it after it breaks? I wouldn't really want any nasty smells in my car or in the nursery.

Some people say it smells sweet. I think the only way it would smell bad would be if there happened to be meconium in it.

My water broke everywhere in our bathroom (luckily I was just getting off the toilet and the bathroom is tile, of course) with DS1.  It didn't smell much at all and was mostly clear.  I just used a bunch of towels to soak it up (and had to shove some between my legs because I kept gushing while I was walking around) and the towels just got washed in the washing machine.  If your water broke on your car upholstery or on your couch I would imagine that it might be best to do some clean up yourself and then get it professionally done since if it's a gusher it would soak into the cushions.  More than likely, though, your water won't break as spectacularly as mine did as I hear that is actually pretty rare.

Mine broke in bed, but I felt it so got up to get towels to sit on while I called the doctor.  It didn't soak through.  It also didn't smell.  I wouldn't worry too much about it, cause I heard most peoples' water don't break on their own.

Well, have heard that odds are your water will not break, you will just go into labor; however, my water did break.  I was actually laying in bed and just felt something so i ran to the bathroom.  Really, while walking to the bathroom, nothing really happened so I didn't mess anything up.  When I sat down, my mucous plug came up followed quickly by my water breaking and coming out.  It was kind of slow (those movies where they just have water go everywhere did not happen, at least for me).  As I was getting ready for the hospital, I just stood over a towel.  It's clear and I don't remember it smelling.  In the car on the way to the hospital I just sat on towels, but when I was sitting, nothing came out....but when I got out of the car...a larger rush of fluid came out and my pants got all wet.  Let me tell you how fun that is to walk through the hospital with soaking wet pants....lol.  If your water happens to break, remember that when you get out of the car, the fluid that is there could do that.

Good luck!

Just had a birthing class yesterday where they talked about it. The teacher said only about 10% of women have the water break before they go into labor. So you if you're already in labor then you probably won't be in your car, etc., when your water breaks. Most of the time it is just a trickle and not a huge gush. Also, it should not smell bad. If it does then it could be a sign of infection and you should call your doctor/go to the hospital right away.
